Warhammer Battle Reports 7th / 8thNauticans / Design Fantasy Gallery

new Warhammer 8th Edition VIDEO - from Games Workshop Studio

A commentary on the Warhammer Fantasy Battle Rulebook Background section.

A handful of neat new (I think) Warhammer artwork pics and an interview with Phil Kelly one of the GW game developers. It's just short of 5 mins and worth a watch.

Apparently, in the background, there is new information about each army which does not currently exist in the 7th edition rulebook or the existing Warhammer army books.

Albion - a new Warhammer Fantasy Army pdf has been released

An unofficial Warhammer Battle Army book pdf for free download (or viewing online)

Mathias (or M4cR1II3n to give him his forum name) has created another outstanding army list for Warhammer Fantasy Battle.

Not content with Araby, Cathay, Kislev and Nippon he's now come up with Albion and the standards of presentation and content are equally as high (and we're talking very high, as in Empire State building kind of high !)

We've added the new army to the forum :-

Battle Reporter - Unofficial Warhammer Armies forum here.

Please join and give us your feedback, we're a friendly bunch.

Here's a quick rundown...

Why collect Albion ?

The army of Albion is filled with barbarian warriors and mystical creatures. Warbands and frenzied Woad Raiders form the core of the army, Chariots swirl over the battlefield, Swordmaidens display their skill with the blade, and Truthsayers call forth the power of the earth itself.

Loads of fantastic unique units like:-

- the Fenbeast, an unbreakable, non-thinking, plant like creature
- the Hearth Guard, a chieftains personal bodyguard, elite stubborn warriors.
- frenzied armour-less shock troops covered from head to foot in tattoos.
- head hurling skirmishers !
- teams with hunting dogs.
- giant stubborn Mastodons (unit strength 10) that carry their masters into battle.
- the terrifying Fir Bolg, that enhances it's ranks with it's enemies dead !
- even flying pixies that can befuddle the enemy with their glamour.

In all there are 5 Lord, 4 Heroes, 6 core units, 6 special units, 3 rare units, almost 50 magic items and a whole new Lore of the Truthsayers. You can even choose Boudeca (aka Bodicea) to lead your army into battle !

We now have all of these cool armies on the forum for free use. Please consider joining the forum to provide your comments and suggestions or, even better, play testing feedback. Thanks folks, Sigmar.

All of the above armies are unofficial and none of them are endorsed by Games Workshop

the Fantasy Battle Reporter forum needs YOU !

The Warhammer Battle Reporter forum is looking for more members.

In 2007 a crack unit of veteran Warhammer gamers was sent to create a forum for gaming crimes they didn't commit. These Hammerers promptly formed the friendliest forum in the Warhammer world. Today, still hammering, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you need a forum, if no one else can help (because the other forums spend so much time arguing !), and if you can find them, maybe you can join the Warhammer Fantasy Battle Reporter forum !

428 members, loads of veterans and Warhammer bloggers, a great network of experienced gamers (from all round the world) who know where to look for everything and can answer all questions. Loads of awesome fan-made content including 6 unofficial Warhammer armies, loads of member mini pics and forums for all Warhammer races.

Everyone's welcome, new players and grey beard veterans alike.  We need YOU !

PS. we even have an arcade full of browser games.  If anyone can beat evilcartoonist's 9-ball pool score I'll eat my platemail armour !

Warhammer Rulebook Commentary VIDEO from Games Workshop Studio

A video by GW about the Battles Section of the 8th edition Warhammer Fantasy Rules

It's only 4 minutes long but it's worth a watch, there are some nice battlefield pics in there too.

It's all about the rulebook scenarios and campaigns and injecting Warhammer character into your battles with special rules, terrain and stories.

White Dwarf July 2010 (WD 367 UK) review - It's ALL Warhammer Fantasy Battle !

The second part of my White Dwarf contents review, Games Workshop have done a great job on this issue

(nb: the photo on the right is NOT the cover, see link below for cover pic).

The 1st part of the review is here:- White Dwarf July 2010 review

The first big Fantasy article starts with the title "War Never Ending"
(14 pages long, including the excellent pics)
It really sets the scene and theme of the new Warhammer rulebook and the work GW have been doing to flesh out and elaborate on events and the history of the Warhammer World itself. The Rulebook contains 116 pages, written by Phil Kelly covering Warhammer history and background. The White Dwarf article really emphasizes the immediacy and urgency of the wars raging between all of the races and gives a sense that it's reaching it's climax (darkness or order !).

The 14 page article also contains sections dedicated to the Warhammer Battles section (102 pages in the rulebook) and the Miniatures Showcase section (110 pages). Which I guess means the rules themselves take up 204 pages).

Anyway, it's an interesting read with a lot of great photos (if only my battles looked like that !)

Illuminations - the Art of Warhammer
(8 pages of some excellent artwork)
Talk about the thinking, history and purpose behind Warhammer artwork.

Call to Arms
(6 pages of army lists)
Suggested army lists from GW Studio Staff including High Elves 2500pts, Ogres 3000pts, Dwarfs 3000pts, Wood Elves 2000pts, Warriors of Chaos 3000pts. A few nice insights and tips.

Last Stand of the Slaughterer
(24 page Battle Report : 3,500pts Empire vs Orcs and Goblins)
Stunning battle report including the use of new mysterious terrain and scenery including the Wizards Tower, Wyrding Well, Blessed Bulwark and Wildwood.  They record victory points at the end of each turn, at the conclusion one side almost achieves a crushing victory on the enemy (double their number of victory points).

A win is now +100 victory points more than your enemy (apparently, there is a mistake in the rulebook [!!!] which says double your enemy pts is a win. Note: double points is a crushing victory, not just a win).

Standard Bearer
(3 pages by Jervis Johnson)
About the new rulebook and how GW have focused on making it more than just a set of rules and have aimed to create a book that will help realize the full potential in the Warhammer hobby.

Fields of Glory
(4 pages on Mysterious Terrain and 2 pages showing of an example Battlefield)
There are dozens of examples of this kind of terrain and scenery in the rulebook. The White Dwarf article focuses on 7 of the pieces, The Blessed Bulwark; Wyrding Well (drinking from it has unpredictable consequences which are generally good or mixed but could be as bad as "magical poisoning" - the unit cannot act for a turn - ouch !), Scree Slope (an excellent defensive position because it's not only a hill but is treacherous and can hurt those fleeing, charging and marching on it, on the d6 roll of a 1 for each model), Charnel Pit (mentioned in part I of my review, see above link); Blood Forest (a forest that reacts to magic and might attack and even move randomly 2d6" afterwards !); Sorcerous Portal and finally the Elven Waystone.

This is a really inspiring read because it's all new and a fantastic addition to the game - you'll love it (or at least, I did !)

Battlefield Terrain
(2 pages advert for Realm of Battle Gameboards)
An excellent battlefield full of GW terrain (depressing for me because I know I'll never get the time to create something like that !)

Battlefields
(4 pages of scenery created by GW model makers)
Another depressively awe-inspiring example of what can be done if you have the time and skills (mainly the skills this time !). It's a coastal raid by Dark Elves on a High Elf rocky coastal bastion. It looks fantastic although it's a bit impractical to play a battle on.

The Legion of Despair
(8 pages covering individual models and units from a Vampire Counts army)
A nice army indeed. It's painted slightly differently to many undead armies you'll see. The choices of colours have been quite imaginative and the terrain and scenery included within the units themselves is great. Lots of conversion work and some good stuff to inspire some experimental modeling.  The zombie unit conversions and crypt ghouls clambering over plinths and tombstones are fantastic. A very nice article.

Eavy Metal Showcase - Clash of Champions
4 incredible one-on-one "duel" dioramas including Warrior Priest vs Chaos Lord, Waywatcher and Dryad vs Wargor and Tyrion himself vs Malekith's personal champion  (my money's on Tyrion !) Great painting, as always from the Eavy Metal crew (see example below).

White Dwarf WD367 July 2010 - THE Fantasy Battle edition !

The best White Dwarf ever ? If you're a Warhammer Fantasy Battle fan then it might be. Games Workshop have pulled out all the stops and focused soley on WFB - hurray !

This is my favourite edition of White Dwarf for several years and why - it's fantastic, loads of stuff about the new rules, awesome battle reports and dozens of super cool miniature and diorama pics to drool over. Also, from my own (sad old gamer) perspective not a laser or spaceship in sight !

July's edition is 120 pages of Fantasy fun, it's a celebration of the new 8th edition rulebook release and they've packed a lot of juicy stuff in there. I thoroughly recommend this White Dwarf edition. Here's a brief contents review:-

click any image to greatly enlarge it.

Adverts for new Warhammer Fantasy Battle products (9 pages)

Products released on 10th July:-

528 page rulebook (see pic): (£45, 65euros, 450dkr, 560skr/nkr)
- 4 sections: rules; world background; minis showcase; battle variations

Template Set: (£5, 6.5euros, 50dkr, 65skr/nkr)
- a single template (which is a large round artillery template which incorporates the smaller template, both of which have central holes to determine which model is directly under the center)
- flame template emblazoned with flame effect/sun symbols.

Counter set (see pic): (£8, 10.5euros, 80dkr, 100skr/dkr)
- 6 comet shaped, double sided flee and charge markers
- charge arc monitor to place on the edge of units to determine frontal arc
- 8 double sided wounds and ongoing effect markers
- combat resolution calculator *

* a finely crafted flat chocolate bar shaped counter which incorporates a tally system with sculpted images of the things you need to remember such as ranks, banner, wounds etc. And pegs to record the numbers for each side and the amount the loser has to pass his break test by. It's a very nice looking accessory with lots of character (see image).

Warhammer Collectors edition (£75, 97.50euros, 750dkr, 940skr/dkr)
- a top quality looking rulebook with an awesome golden hammer and comet emblazoned on the front, a metal side clasp and apparently the highest quality parchment paper. It looks the business. Only 3,500 available worldwide and from GWs last pres release it seems some places have already sold out.

Warhammer Gamer's Edition pack (£75, euros97.50, 750dkr, 940skr/nkr)
- a canvas shoulder bag with an inner sleeve for the rulebook plus the skull dice (with black pouch), flame and area effect template, 6 flee/charge markers, combat res calculator and 8 wound/on going effect markers.

Engineer's ranging set (£18, euros22.50, 180dkr, 230skr/nkr)
- a 4 foot long unfolding ruler and calipers for accurate measuring (instead of holding a tape measure above the units I guess !) Your measure with the calipers and then use a ruler to measure the distance between the two caliper points (it should remove some of those close to call, "let's roll a dice for it" moments. Calipers have a nice grim reaper effect emblazoned in the "hilt". It's quite a beast (in terms of size).

Battle Magic Card set (£6, 7.75euros, 60dkr, 75skr/nkr)
All 8 battle magic spell lores included, 7 cards for each lore (which is all the spells, including the signature spell and the lore attribute).

I'll definitely be getting these, they should speed up play and I can shove them in my pocket so I can memorize them while doing otherwise very boring things like travelling to work !

Beastmen Battle Magic (£3, euros3.90, 30dkr, 40skr/nkr)
The first in the range of spell cards for all Fantasy Army races (includes 7 cards).

Skull Dice (£7, euros9.10, 70dkr, 90skr/nkr)
8 dice plus a decent looking black pouch.

Citizens of the Empire - new miniatures (collectors range)
2 duellists (£8.50, euros11, 85dkr, 105skr/nkr)
- a very cool, slightly arrogant looking empire pistolier with 2 guns and an empire character kissing his sword before kicking a$$ :)

Merchant and scribe (£8.50, euros11, 85dkr, 105skr/nkr)
- nice looking specialist minis, could be good for a diorama (both are very well sculpted, the scribe looks like a moody so and so !)

Regimental Mascot (£10.50, 13euros, 100dkr, 125skr/nkr)
- brilliant Bear and musician/trainer combination. The bear has an eye patch, and the the handler has what I thought was a mandolin but apparently it's a hurdy-gurdy :) They're on GW's advance order site so check them out there.

Phew, there's the free GW advertisting, I'll post the rest of the review tomorrow...

Here are the highlights, in a nutshell... masses of top quality inspiring miniature and terrain / scenery pics; 5 or 6 suggested army lists from GW studio members (including brief tips/tactics); a 24 page (!) battle report - Empire vs Orcs and Gobbos; a feature on mysterious terrain which has an impact on the battle (or units within a certain proximity to it *;  a massive and I mean massive (try 8" tall, 13" long) fire dragon from Forgeworld and some truly incredible duel dioramas from the Eavy Metal crew which have to be seen to be believed (esp. Tyrion vs the Witch Kings personal champion)

* so far, my favourite piece of mysterious terrain is the charnel pit which gives undead units within 6" a regen (6) save because it's easy for them to find spare parts !

I haven't actually read it all yet, so I'd better do that before posting the rest of the review !

Warhammer Island of Blood boxed set (Skull Pass replacement)

Games Workshop announce a new Fantasy Battle Starter boxed set called Island of Blood

The official announcement from GW:-

"The Warhammer world; it is a place riven by battle, where mighty armies clash for glory, honour or the entertainment of Dark Gods. Darkened skies, tortured by cataclysmic magics tear open and rain blood upon the ceaseless combatants and the landscape is wracked by the carnage around it. Trees writhe in mutated agony, lashing out with limb and branch and rivers flow thick with the corpses of the slain. All upon the land are consumed by the unending battle, an age of war in which victory and defeat hang in the balance.

Cast against this macabre tableau fight mighty armies -warriors by their million raise banners of defiance or icons of dismay, taking up arms in the clash for survival. Beleaguered and surrounded, the forces of Order fight desperately to stem the tide of the armies of Destruction. Delighting in the carnage and ruination, the Dark Gods look on.

The Island of Blood is but one battleground upon the face of the Warhammer world, a mystical and dangerous place that has been twisted and mutated by the warping power of Chaos. In ages past the Island of Blood was a battleground upon which armies have bled and died in the ageless battle for supremacy... and they will do so again. Soon.

The Island of Blood is the new boxed game for Warhammer and is released this September. Packed full of stunning plastic Citadel miniatures and containing all the rules, dice and templates you'll need to play, it's the essential purchase for fans of the Warhammer hobby.

Meanwhile, if you like the Battle for Skull Pass boxed game (and who wouldn't with all those Goblins and Dwarfs) then it only seems fair to point out that once the last few remaining copies are gone they're gone, and they're never coming back! Pick one up while stocks last.

In August we'll feature more information about The Island of Blood on games-workshop.com and the full details will be released in September's White Dwarf.

If you can't wait until September to get your hands on the new rules then don't forget that the new Warhammer Rulebook and complete range of accessories are available to advance order by clicking on the image below."

Fantasy Battle Gaming Aids for Warhammer 8th Edition - VIDEO

Games Workshop VIDEO of Warhammer gaming aids including: extendable ruler, markers, calipers, flame and artillery templates and what looks like a combat resolution calculator.

Some nice looking WFB gadgets from GW are coming out to support the new rulebook release.

Citadel Warhammer Catalogue from Games Workshop

GW just released the 2010 Citadel Catalogue and it looks quite useful. Especially because of the sprue pics and of course all the expert painting.

600 colour pages for miniature painting / modelling ideas covering Fantasy Battle, Lord of the Rings and Warhammer 40k.

Any info you can get on a model before you actually put the bucks on the table is good news as far as I'm concerned. I like what I see so far in the catalog pics Games Workshop have provided. Any photos of model sprues are very welcome because people always want to know what they have to work with and importantly, the options available for customization and, of course, how many spare parts they'll get to mess around with later :)

Warhammer Fantasy Battle 8th Edition Reviews

Lengthy reviews of the new Warhammer Fantasy Battle Rulebook edition 8 (out on July 10th 2010)

Baddice.co.uk and waaaghcast.blogspot.com have both released lengthy chats about the new rules, the differences and their opinion on the new WFB Rulebook.

These are long podcasts and I haven't had a chance to listen to all of it yet so I can't give you my opinion but I thought you might like to listen for yourself and form your own anyway.

You can go to the sites and stream or download the podcasts or use the mp3 links below which should play the mp3s in your browser.

Warhammer Fantasy 8th Edition Rulebook and Accessories

New Warhammer Rules, miniatures, skull dice, ranging set, counters and Fantasy Battle Magic cards - and they look fantastic !

Games Workshop have pulled out all the stops and come up with some very high quality looking product releases to support the new rulebook.

I'm quite intrgiued by the new miniatures. I wouldn't mind guessing that they support some new rules. They're all called citizens; duellists, regimental mascot and merchant and scribe. Hmmm... interesting. Does anyone know what the new miniatures are all about ?

On the GW site go to... Warhammer > Warhammer Advance Orders

The dice look brilliant and I'll definitely get the magic cards which detail all the spells in the book and everything you need to know to cast them.

The rulebook on the left is the Warhammer Collectors' edition and it looks like a mighty fine tome !  Here's what GW have to say...

"This is the ultimate edition of Warhammer. A true heirloom of the Warhammer world, this grimoire is even larger than the more-widely available rulebook, something we were sure wasn't possible! Opening up its thick, embossed covers you'll discover the Warhammer rulebook in full colour, presented on highest quality parchment. The Collectors' Edition comes with three dividing ribbons for ease of reference during games and a metal clasp to keep the tome shut, lest unnameable horrors escape from its pages."

PS. It's a limited edition 3,500 copies only !

You'd better check out the GW site, there's quite a lot of stuff up there and it's all looking extremely good for us Fantasy Battle fans - I can't wait !!!!

Nippon Warhammer Fantasy Army Book released

A new unofficial Warhammer army list has just been released by M4cR1II3n (one of the Battle Reporter forum members). This one is all about Nippon - the land of the rising sun.

This army has since been updated (9-Feb-2013), review here.

It's another superb tome to get your grubby Hammering mitts around. M4cR1II3n has a knack for creating superb army lists.

The Nippon Army Book is in the Warhammer Battle Reporter projects forum for downloading or viewing online:-

Fan-made (unofficial) pdf Warhammer Army books for download

Don't miss the other great books including Albion, Araby, Cathay, Dwarfs of Chaos, Kislev and the Nauticans. All of these army lists are in playable (albeit draft) formats and concur with standard Warhammer Fantasy rules.

Please post your comments and feedback in the above forum.

BTW, they're all free to download with no catches !

Here are some of the highlights:-

The "fluff" is outstanding you get a real feel for "the way of the warrior", respect, truth, loyalty, discipline and above all... honour ! A lot of research went into the history and background and it's really paid off.

A summary of some of the unit list:-

From the Hatamoto warriors who will commit seppuku if they break from combat - to Sumo Warriors with their crushing grip - to the daemonic unbreakable Oni for those daring enough to summon one ! From Ninja with their blowguns, caltrop spikes, grappling hooks and smoke bombs to the deadly Akodo Kaneka, Shogun of Nippon with his masterful command of his warriors (18" leadership, re-roll failed break tests !)

There are 4 Lord options, 6 Heroes, 5 Core (including the Samurai I suspect everyone will want to field), 5 special (where the Ninjas are hiding) and 3 rare units including some very useful looking unbreakable skirmishers called Ronin, a Thunder Dragon and the lethal Kitsune (like a spirit Wolf and hard to kill).

If that hasn't whet your appetite then I give up !

This army is completely unofficial and is NOT endorsed by Games Workshop
