New Finecast Mangler Squigs

A very Goblin-esque themed Squig Mangler unit (the French "Broyeurs" translates to "Crusher" or "Grinder" apparently, in fact it almost translates to "Garbage Disposal" - which I prefer :)

It looks like a superb model - although I have to say I hate the damned things - very broken rules ! - can you tell that they recently slaughtered a unit of my beloved Weresharks and some Wavebreakers to boot :(

My friend actually brought his disgusting Goblin army around to my house last weekend - next time his entry will be blocked by The King of the Seas with a metal detector -  bloody balls and chains ! Real (fish)men  fight with tridents :)

Anyway, the models really have come on, they look extremely sneaky now days which fits their gaming style perfectly - something Jervis Johnson kind of alluded to in one of his White Dwarf Standard Bearer columns recently (about fitting the rules to the fluff).

Anyway, I suspect this model will prove very popular with our greenskin buddies and will be snapped up ;-)  thanks to it's profile and special rules as well as it's looks ! (I love the five goblin "hangers on")

New Mangler Squig Miniature - an awesome model !

A fantastic new Mangler Squig model for the Orcs and Gobbos army - courtesy of MPG

These guys are quick off the mark and offer some great models that Games Workshop just doesn't cater for right now, such as the Jabberslythe, Cygor and Ghorgon miniatures for the Beastmen Army.

I really like the Mangler model, it fits in well with the tongue in cheek (or gobbo in gob !) side of the O&G army - I'm thinking Doom Divers, Fanatics and the infamous Snotling Pump Wagon ! (if it still exists ?) Let's face it, a sense of humour can help when you  field a greenskin army !

Anyway, I haven't got the O&G army book yet so I can't comment on the Squig Mangler unit itself because it was new to the 8th edition army. So, you'll just have to enjoy the pics...

As always, click the images to enlarge them.

Goblin Fanatic by Gamezone Miniatures

Alternative goblin fanatic model.

I really like this little greenskin, mushroom chomping, anvil swinging, nutter. Great mini and worth a look if you fancy an alternative. Gamezone Minis are new to me, they look pretty good from a brief browse. I'll check it all out in a bit more detail and maybe post a review in the expert miniatures gallery.

More Orcs and Goblins Pics and Dates

The Orcs and Goblins Army book and miniature release dates are 5th March and 19th March (2011 obviously !)  - now see the size of those GIGANTIC spiders - all 4 of them !

Games workshop or rather Da Black Gobbo has posted a short article on the new Greenskin army and there is a great picture which really puts the SPIDER into perspective (below). There is also lots of gobbo speak if you're keen to pick up the language and banter before your next greenskin scrap - vs enemies or mates or just with yourself ! (sorry, I'm just trying to get into the gobbo / orcish spirit)

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/blogPost.jsp?aId=15200022a

Check the individual advance order pages for each product to see when they're out. The book is on general release on 5th March. If you buy it through advance order you should receive it on the day of release through the post - ie before your red eyed, sneaky, mushroom eating frienemies have even dragged themselves out of their straw sacks :)

New Orcs and Goblins 8th Edition Army Released!

They're here, they're green and they're awesome ! Games Workshop have just put the new Orcs and Goblins 8th edition Army hardback (!) book and new models on advance order.

Orcs and Goblins 8th edition army book
These models are brilliant, I don't always get excited about new releases and I wasn't expecting to about the O&Gs because I didn't think there was that much more that they could do with the army (by way of new model ideas). However... check out the Giant Gobbo bearing Spider - the Arachnarok, it's brilliant ! (and as a nice surprise, it's not expensive either* relatively speaking !!)

* although knowing gobbos there will be some sort of sneaky catch or a snotling pickpocket in the shop ;-)

Anyway, I'm enamored with these new models (well mainly the spider), and the new army book cover which is also extremely cool. I like army books quite colourful, I think it's more fantasy like and this one fits the bill for me.

There are stacks of pics on the Games Workshop Advance orders page, although no sprue pics yet.  Check this out though, the Spider is made up of 95 parts ! that should give plenty of scope for people to customize the model to their tatstes. The spider howdah has a crew of 8 forest goblins and it includes a Flinger and a Catchweb Spidershrine - whatever that is ?!?

This model is HUGE, it comes with a 150mm x 50mm base !  (that's 3 monster bases, ie giants standing shoulder to shoulder - if you can find 3 giants sober enough).

Anyway, here's the link:-

I haven't been keeping up-to-date with the O&G rumours so I'm not sure how much of this is news but it looks like there is a new unit called the Nasty Skulkers - lol, I love it :)

Greenskins alert - GW site hacked !

It looks like the new Orcs and Goblins army book is almost due for release :)

title="Orcs

The sneaky greenskins have clearly been honing their hacking skills (and grafitti) and have paid Games Workshop's website a timely visit to advertise the pending release of their new army book.

If I recall rightly, the first indication of a new army book release is usually followed by the book itself about 6 weeks later. So, I suspect the next White Dwarf will have quite a bit of promotion / advertising / prices etc and we will be greeted by the O&Gs arrival sometime in late March. That's just a guess though, if you know any better please post a comment.

Vomit and the perfect High Elf unit ?

Beware Troll King Throgg and his bilious cohort - they don't mix well with shiny High Elven armour ! Something else came out of last weekend's battle... I think I may have discovered the perfect High Elven unit and I'm not talking about Swordmasters or White Lions !

King Throgg Trolls
King Throgg made a very unwelcome appearance on the glorious High Elven battlefield (around at my pad) a couple of weeks ago and I have since installed a King Throgg detector (Tyrion's big brother) on the front door to prevent his return.

My High Elves did not take any porcelain toilets or large buckets into battle and so were not well prepared for the Troll King's rampage. He literally puked his way to victory along with 5 of his buddies suffering from extreme "gut rot". I can only assume that late night doner kebabs and 10 pints were the order of the day on the evening before the battle.

The High Elves made a decent start by taking out all of the enemy's vanguard units (warhounds, and 2 marauder horsemen) with some ease, although it resulted in a mistake... one of the Marauder units was bait ! (at least that's the way it turned out). Here's what happened...

The Dragon Princes dispatched one mounted marauder unit to find themselves a bit too close for comfort to a unit of 6 trolls including king Throgg himself.  It should be said that the Trolls needed to charge 10 inches so it wasn't a foregone conclusion but once they rolled the 10 they needed death proceeded on a mega scale.

The Trolls dispatched the Dragon Princes in 2 combat rounds and even survived (what turned out to be an illegal) charge in the rear by a White Lion chariot (which rolled 1 impact hit !). I don't think the chaiort caused even 1 wound on the trolls. Once the trolls had finished puking their way to victory against those two units they moved on my back line which consisted of 15 Swordmasters protecting 2 repeaters and 2 units of archers and Teclis (who wisely decided to start moving out of the way). The rest of my force had moved slightly forward to take the incoming charges from marauders and warriors.

The Swordmasters were my only hope for my back line. They fought bravely and caused a few wounds but Throgg kept rolling high for his copious vomit attack and they were literally dissolved to death by stomach acid.

The archers were next and then the repeater, obviously none of them managed to do much damage to the Trolls. Teclis, who was now well out of the way, managed to cause a few wounds with his Lore of Fire spells but there were still about 3 trolls when they met up with my final unit of archers who valiantly caused a wound before being puked to death.

It was one heck of a Troll show. They had taken out 5 Dragon Princes, a Lion Chariot, 15 swordmasters, 2 repeaters and 2 units of archers single handedly by using nothing other than vomit attacks ! Only the Swordmasters and Teclis had managed to fell any of the bloated monsters.

My back line had been destroyed and the game was only heading in one direction - total annihilation !

Things looked completely different however in the center of the battle ground where White Lions and Phoenix Guard fought valiantly on and were cutting large swathes through the marauders and cutting down far more Chaos warriors than I thought they would be capable of. The High Elves magic had been severely curtailed by the loss of a wizard that, due to a miscast was now a level 0 non-spelllcaster and the loss of the Banner of Sorcery (carried by the Dragon Princes) which had granted the elves an extra +d3 power dice.

Nonetheless, Teclis remained very much part of the game. He successfully cast Flaming Sword of Rhuin 3 times on the Phoenix Guard which granted them +1 to wound for 6 combat turns and he had made quite a few fireball kills and wounds on the trolls. He was however, not really worth his 475 points cost in terms of damage but he was worth the points in terms of fun (from my perspective !)

The White Lions were eventually surrounded and cut down although they stood until the very last elf and were  worth their points cost.

The Phoenix Guard were the real heroes of the battle (from my point of view) and caused almost as much damage as the trolls had. I had "tooled up" this unit a bit and it included not only the BSB but a noble and some a nice magic item combo (to make sure they hung around). This is probably the best performance I have ever seen from a High Elf unit.  Here's what the unit consisted of:-

Noble (Hero) with Crown of Command [Stubborn, leadership 9], heavy armour, great weapon
Noble (Hero) BSB with battle banner [+d6 combat res], heavy armour, great weapon
13 Phoenix Guard + Full Command

Plastic Phoenix Guard unit

With always strikes first and initiative 6 they were almost always going to re-roll missed hits and with a strength 4 attack (and +1 to wound, due to Flaming Sword of Rhuin), they were going to cause a lot of damage. Note only that but due to their ward save, leadership 9 and stubborn and with the BSB for leadership re-rolls they were not going to go anywhere either.

The Phoenix Guard made a real mess of the marauders and chaos warriors and the enemy lost their general who was cut down when he turned to flee the onslaught. When it was clear that Chaos had taken the day only the Phoenix Guard and Teclis still stood (and the Trolls were hot on his heels !). For a bit of fun we put the Phoenix Guard in the center of the battlefield and surrounded them with all of the remaining chaos units (some warriors, marauders and two depleted units of knights). Get this... if the Phoenix Guard had rolled a 3 on their Battle Banner roll, they would have won the combat !  Alas, they rolled a 1 and then failed their leadership test (and I forgot to re-roll for the BSB) so they were cut down where they stood.

My summary:- Trolls are bad (in a good way) but, with the right support, Phoenix Guard are better !

New plastic multi-part River Trolls boxed set for Orcs and Goblins Army

Games Workshop are relaesing some great new Fantasy Battle River Trolls.

I really like these miniatures, they should "paint up" really well (as you can see). The models have a lot of fine detail and loads of character. I really like the vomiting troll ! (it seems that the vomit is an optional modification so you don't need to deploy a "sick" troll if you don't want to - although I suspect he'll still have halitosis :)

Here are the important details:- three different bodies, five different heads and five different pairs of arms.

There are sprue shots and other model photos on the Games Workshop website under Orcs and Goblins > Rare units.

New Plastic Orc Boar Boyz by Games Workshop

Games Workshop are releasing some new Orcs and Goblin fantasy army miniatures.

These are the new all plastic Orc Boar Riders. Both Orcs and boars seem pretty well modeled to me. They look like they're moving at speed and are charging into combat - and are very keen to do so ! (which is what I'd expect from orcs).

There are more pics on the Games Workshop website including the photos of the model sprues (under Warhammer Armies > Orcs and Goblins > Special Units)

Will Warhammer Orcs and Goblins be split into an Orc Army Book and a Goblin Army Book ?

A recent Games Workshop announcement had me thinking that the Orcs and Goblins might become two separate Fantasy Battle armies.

GW announced on the weekend (28th Feb 2010) that there is some exciting news coming in April about some Orcs and Goblins developments being released in May.

Rumour has it that there are some new boxed sets coming out for Boar Riders and other Orc units. I'm fairly sure this is what the announcement is all about and that the part metal Boar Boys boxed sets are being updated to all plastic. Indeed there are rumours that mounted units in other armies are also going the same way (hurray !).

I was wondering if this could be a prelude to something bigger. After all, GW have been suggesting that a new army list is in development (whether it's 40k or Fantasy or both we don't know yet).

I think that dividing the current O&G army into two might be one of the easiest and most cost effective ways for GW to make new money by building on an existing concept. They could bring out a few new "specialist" greenskin units or army wide rules to spice things up and a lot of people would probably welcome the development because they could field two new armies with minimal investment. Such a change might also encourage people who brought the Skull Pass set to build out their goblinoid armies.

Also, it would not break anything in terms of fluff which certainly wouldn't need to change much and Jervis Johnson himself pointed out that they need to be careful with all new releases to ensure they fit in with the current Warhammer worlds. In fact, it might even be possible to retain the old army book and also release new Orc and Goblin specific ones.

However, I should point out that Jervis also suggested new unexpected things from new developments...

"...we also think it's important to keep on trying to surprise you with unexpected new things that aren't designed as part of an existing army." (Jervis in White Dwarf WD 363 March 2010)

And while separate army books for Orcs and Goblins might be a surprise but could not really be described as  "...new things that aren't designed as part of an existing army."

He did however also say that you can expect to be able to use all your existing models in any new army development. So, you never know, I think it's certainly a possibility and I wouldn't be surprised at all. Hmmm...

I've kicked off a topic in the Battle Reporter forum about it :-

Splitting the Orcs and Goblins Fantasy codex into 2 separate army lists

Games Workshop Brigade boxed sets for Warhammer Fantasy Battle - a bargain !

Good combinations of Warhammer Fantasy units and around 30% off The Empire Brigade and Orcs & Goblin Brigade miniatures.

I'm usually dubious about special "deals" believing they are usually more "special" for the seller than the buyer !

Anyway, I have done the maths and the new Empire and Orcs and Goblins Brigade Boxes are actually a very good bargain (see below). They are also full of the right kind of units that everyone is likely to use for large and small scale battles.
  • If you bought the Empire miniatures individually they would cost you (In UK GBP) £135.95, the Empire Brigade is £97.75 which is almost 30% less.
  • It's the same with the Orcs and Goblins Brigade, although you actually save a little bit more. The price drops from £136.95 to £97.85.

Unfortunately, there is a catch; the Brigades are limited in stock. I hope this is just Games Workshop testing the waters and that these boxed sets will become a permanent feature in the stores. I reckon GW are onto a winner with these Brigades and I really, really hope they bring them out for all the other armies because I have completed my Empire and O&G miniature collections :(

Orcs & Goblin Tactics : Greenskin Artillery

Warhammer Fantasy forum experts speak their minds

This is a new series of master class Warhammer tactica tips and advice from the Warhammer Battle Reporter Fantasy forum experts. Expect plenty more.

This article is by Sever14, a great player and a great forum member. Thanks Sever14.

Orc and Goblin Artillery Tactics

"'What is the most important unit in a greenskin army?' Well, it’s the artillery units. Doom Divers, Spear Chukkas, and even Rock Lobbas. But this isn’t a unit, its several different units. Yes that is true, but together they are the most important aspect in a greenskin army. If you hold on I’ll explain.
When you fight against greenskin armies, what do you generally face? Lots of models, units, and just well a mob of green. How do you deal with this mob? Well your gonna be up against orcs with a toughness of 4, measly goblins with crazed fanatics, several units of fast cavalry. That’s pretty much a staple of all greenskin armies, so how do you beat these armies? Cause panic/terror tests and have units that strength 4 models can not hurt or beat. Also you need a sacrificial unit or two to “pop” fanatics out of night gobbo units. So lets see here, basic blocks of infantry are not going to cut it. They might win against gobbo’s, but anything that can shake a stick wins against gobbos. But against big blocks of orcs, it’s a different matter. You need elite troops, heavy cavalry, or monsters.

Elite troops and heavy cavalry give orcs nightmares
since they hit hard enough to do a good number of wounds against toughness 4 and the orcs have a hard time wounding in return. Monsters that cause terror are wonderful against greenskins since they hit hard, are hard to hurt, and make the enemy take terror tests with low leadership. Since most greenskin units are quite large, its hard to make then take panic tests from shooting, so spells or weapons which force panic tests also work well.

Hmmm, as a greenskin, those units make me almost wet myself in battle. Nasty fighting characters in large units helps, but against strength 5 or 6 hits, even they fall quite a bit. Artillery to the rescue. Artillery provides what the rest of the army lacks, high strength, multiple wounds, ignoring armor save attacks. Whats even better, well for 300 pts you get 2 doom diver, 2 spear chukkas, and a rock lobba. Personally I prefer 2 doom divers and 4 spear chukkas for 300 pts. So now we have an answer to monsters and knights and elite expensive infantry.

Where do I place my artillery?

Well, you want to be able to shoot every turn of course and not lose your artillery. So hills are always nice, and the edge of woods as well. I mean if the enemy spends a lot of effort shooting at 35 pts spear chukkas, well I really don’t care since I have several more, and 35 pts is almost a waste to shoot at. One trick I have used is to place these guys far in the rear of my army behind my units. You have 48” to 60” range, so they can be placed a long way from the enemy. I place them in the gaps so they can see just a sliver of the enemy or his large targets. All you need is a small line of sight, so the 1” in-between your own units works, but when you do this, it’s a good idea to make sure he has large targets as well or something on a hill so you can always shoot at something worth while.

What do I shoot at?

Well, what cant your blocks of infantry handle? Doom Divers are great for knights and elite infantry since D6 strength 5 hits cause a hurting to these often small and expensive units. Bolt throwers should shoot at high toughness, multiple wound models, such as dragons, steam tanks, hydras, or if you can a flank shot at knights. Now we are green and everything counts in numbers, so if you want to be sure to put a dent in the enemy’s chaos knights, shoot both doom divers at it, 2d6 str 5 hits that ignore armor should eliminate that threat. I cant tell you how many times my doom divers have made up for their pts by sending mad goblins with wings crashing into knights. Also elite infantry such as High Elf Swordmasters or Chaos warriors are good targets.

Bolt throwers are wonderful against monsters. Four bolts to the face of any dragon will keep him hiding quite a while. Sending multiple bolts at stegadons also does wonders for greenskin morale. What happens when I cant shoot at monsters or knights in the flank? Take a shot a lone characters, you have a 19% chance killing a 2 wound hero at short range and about 9% at long range. Again several bolts are better than one. Now if your only targets are units equivalent to rat slaves or other gobbos, move your machine to shoot at something tasty for the next round. Its hard to even justify picking up the dice to shoot at rat slaves.

How do I protect my artillery?

Your general will probably move down the field with the main bulk of the army leaving these guys by themselves. Fast cavalry protect war machines quite well. They can redirect charges and slow down the enemy from eating your war machines. Lets face it, a gobbo crew will win a combat…never, so be prepared to high tail it in a combat. Which leads to my next point, set up your machines so that they cannot be overrun into. Try to make it where your opponent has to spend a turn setting up a charge instead of machine hopping.

It has been my experience, that my 300 pts of artillery has always made up its points and had won quite a few battle for me as well. So after reading this article, I hope as a greenskin general you will never leave on a WAAAGH with out a handy selection of artillery. No go and eat some ‘umies."

If you have any comments you'd like to share with Sever14 and everyone else on this Greenskin Tactica please post them in Orcs and Goblins forum at Warhammer Battle Reporter.

What a bargain. It included:-

  • 54 Forest Goblin Warriors armed with Hand weapon and shield. This includes command models.

Here are the full details, I wish I had known about this sale myself. Check this out:-

Games Workshop release a new Orcs and Goblins Wyvern mounted metal Lord Miniature

a new Azhag the Slaughterer & Skullmuncha metal miniature has been released by Games Workshop

The new Wyvern looks pretty good. I like the detail on the Wyvern's head, tail and spined back. It's also adopting a neat pose that makes it seem like the Wyvern is either about to leap into the air or has just landed.

    360 degree rotating Azhag miniature.

Here's Azhag's and Skullmuncha's profiles on the Games Workshop website.

(note: the 360 degree miniature rotator didn't work for me in Internet Eplorer 8, it works fine in Chrome and Firefox though - it might just be my browser settings ?)

New Fallen Giant Template from Games Workshop

GW's plastic fallen giant template for Warhammer Fantasy Battle

    Fallen Giant Template

GW have removed the old .pdf template and replaced it with this one. I assume it has been designed to neatly cover (or encase) models the giant falls on so it's easier to determine which ones are affected. Useful for opponents who find it difficult to come to a "gentlemen's" agreement when a giant tumbles.

Grimgor Ironhide, Gorbad Ironclaw, Azhag the Slaughterer, Grom the Paunch of Misty Mountain & Skarsnik Warlord of the Eight Peaks (all so cool !)

Are you preparing to field a 3000 pt plus Orcs & Goblins army with no restrictions on special characters ? If the answer is yes then read on...

Images are © Games Workshop Ltd. All rights reserved. Used without permission.
(click to enlarge images in a new window)

    Grimgor Ironhide

Well, first of all, if you haven't used Grimgor before then do so now, in your next battle (unless you're sure your enemy has faced him before and beaten him or negated his usefulness).

Grimgor is one of the hardest characters in the Warhammer world and you can see why with 7 str 7 attacks that always strike first, an armour save of 1+ and a ward of 5+ !!!

You don't get much better than that, he is a true dragon slayer of a character - field him.

Now, if you want to field another Lord level special character, here's a quick summary of some selection tips:-

    Gorbad Ironclaw

Fielding a mainly Orc army ? expecting to be taking on a lot of cavalry ? Need an inspirational general for masses of rank and file ? Gorbad Ironclaw...is your man, err... I mean orc.

He rides a boar, always strikes first, and there's no armour saving throw against his attacks which wound. Also, you can forget about black orcs and field loads and loads of Big Uns instead, on foot and/or on boars.

    Azhag the Slaughterer

Need to counter a bunch of enemy artillery, want to swoop down on them, terrorise them, make them rout and quickly move onto the next war machine ?

Then field Azhag, he's a fast and hard hitting character ideal for taking out long range enemy weaponry that they think is safely tucked away behind their other forces.

Azhag is also a second level wizard with knowledge of one of the more powerful Lores of magic - Death. This will also come in handy behind enemy lines. Get him up close - fast.

Beware: Azhag is subject to stupidity, he has a leadership of 9 so is unlikely to fall foul of it, but I thought I had better warn you.

Grom the Paunch of Misty Mountain

Grom has heeps of character and he's the most colourful of the characters (if you like that sort of thing).

He is also a great way of supporting the gobbo faction in your army if you're fighting Elves because they are immune to their fear if Grom leads your army into the fray (he must be the general).

Best of all however is that Grom has the Killing blow special ability on a 5+ (rather than 6). With 4 attacks he's likely to get a few chances of delivering a killing axe swing (and let me tell you, his axe is extremely big !)

Don't send him into combat alone though, use him to flank the enemy. He will need backup against quality enemy heroes.

Skarsnik Warlord of the Eight Peaks

Skarsnik is probably the most difficult to present a case for inclusion in your army. He does have some sneaky attributes but you have to either get lucky or tie down your own troops a bit to make sure they pay off.The Sneaky Schemes rule means that all enemy units are subject to delayed entry onto the field of battle - each has to roll a D6, a roll of 6 they have to enter the board from the table edge. This could be handy to stop some missile/artillery troops firing early on and to slow your enemy by a few inches but it's not a battle winner. You still have to kill your foe !

The Tricksy Traps which allows night goblins to rally and move straight away is not a significant bonus.

Gobbla the Cave Squig is quite hard with 4 attacks (ws 5, str 6) and the killing blow ability but your opponent will fight back aginst Skarsnik and he is not so hard !

One more significant quality is Skarsnik's prodder but to use it effectively you need massed ranks of goblin and/or orc units withint 12" and it could disrupt your battle plan and reduce your flexibility. You could however have say 4 units within 12" of skarsnik to give him a 24 inch magic blast of pure waaagh worth 5 str 6 hits with no armour save.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend his use for competitive games, only friendlies to try a new character. On the upside he is quite cheap at 205 points.
