KIILING BLOW - Flames of the Phoenix

A new High Elf themed incarnation of the famous Battle Reporter forum game.

The game is now in play and closed to new entrants.

We're switching from the outright slaughter fest which was the Chaos version of killing blow to a slightly more balanced High Elves version with a bit more in the way of magical defense.

To enter : just post the name of one of your favourite Warhammer Fantasy units here.

Every unit gets 15 wounds to start with then members post actions (up to once per day) to increase their unit's chance of survival. The actions are :-

  1. Attack or Defend or
  2. Move an Elven Blessing onto your unit or
  3. Cast the spell of the day**
** Mage's Fireball Monday, Teclis Tuesday, Shadow Warrior Wednesday, Uranon's Thunderbolt Thursday, Flamespyre Friday, Skycutter Saturday (ouch !) or Swordmaster Heroic Blow Sunday (instant death !)

The rules are a lot simpler than you might think, once you've seen a round or two you'll get the idea.

The Combatants (so far: updated 5th July 2013)
----------------------------------------------------------------
  1. High Elf Maiden guard (MrSeb)
  2. Isabella von Carstein (Sigmar)
  3. Sisters of Sigmar (chunkymon)
  4. Wood Elf Glade Riders (Coinsmith1)
  5. Goblin Wolf Riders (Red Orc)
  6. Lothern Skycutter (Grimthorn)
  7. Slaanesh's Chosen (StierWascher)
  8. Kroxigors (MarshDweller)
  9. Eltharion the Grim (Cornishson73)

We're looking for 20 players before battle begins.

New High Elf Miniatures

The new High Elves army book and presumably some (although probably not all) of the new miniatures are released at the end of April (27-04-2013) beginning of May, here's a sneak peek of some of the new models.

I reckon these minis will receive a mixed reaction (personally, I love the characters and am quite impressed by the "Sky Chariot" and Phoenix). They are another bold attempt by Games Workshop to breathe some freshness into the army (which I think was last updated in Winter 2007). The Sky Chariot and Flamespyre Phoenix certainly look very original and are another example of GW creating larger center piece battle ground models on a much bigger scale than we used to see a few years back.

Anyway, here are the pics, courtesy of Rob H on our Warhammer Battle Reporter Facebook group (he found them on http://grimdark.org/) Many thanks for sharing Rob and to the grimdark folks.

Best and Worst 8th Edition Armies

The strongest Warhammer Fantasy Battle Armies under the 8th edition rulebook - poll results. We had over 500 people voting and here's the outcome.

Note that: new Orcs & Goblins, Tomb Kings, Ogre Kingdoms and Vampire Count army books were released during the vote (so some people will have voted before seeing the new armies).

Voters were asked to choose the 5 best and worst WHFB armies.

Which armies are the most powerful under the 8th edition rules ?

I'm sure you'll want to draw your own conclusions, I'm just sorry for the poor old Beastmen because their army book wasn't released that long ago and yet they still come in second bottom in the ranking.

I think anyone who has played against the top 5 know they are disgustingly good, especially Warriors of Chaos (in my opinion).

A note to Games Workshop: I think it's time to bring on those Bretonnian and Wood Elf army books.

New High Elf Finecast miniatures

Korhil (the almost there), Caradryan (the mostly there) and Tyrion (the absolute kick-ass there !) have just been released as Finecast models.

I used to be a big fan of High Elves and, I guess, I still quite like them. Korhil once tried his best for me against his Wood Elf kin, Caradryan did somewhat better and Tyrion totally kicked butt by killing 2 Treekin and a Treeman Ancient and turned the game from a loss into a massacre win (not bad heh ?!) Flaming swords aren't only for Ulthuan barbecues ! :)

Anyway, Games Workshop have re-released the miniatures as Finecast and they look very neat indeed but there again they always did :) Some pics... (Korhil is especially  tempting this time round !)

Best and Worst 8th Edition Armies

So which is the strongest and weakest Warhammer 8th edition Fantasy Battle Army ?

The results for 2010 are almost in, you have 2 days left to vote. Here's the position at the moment.

High Elves, The Empire and Skaven are clearly on top and Wood Elves, Tomb Kings and Bretonnia are bringing up the rear.

The worst Fantasy Battle army vote is very clear with Wood Elves chosen by 60% of the respondents. Their brethren the High Elves were almost as popular for the best army vote gaining over 50% of all votes.

The poll closes on 1st Jan 2011 so please vote now if you haven't already (scroll down the page, you'll find the poll on the right sidebar).

Vomit and the perfect High Elf unit ?

Beware Troll King Throgg and his bilious cohort - they don't mix well with shiny High Elven armour ! Something else came out of last weekend's battle... I think I may have discovered the perfect High Elven unit and I'm not talking about Swordmasters or White Lions !

King Throgg Trolls
King Throgg made a very unwelcome appearance on the glorious High Elven battlefield (around at my pad) a couple of weeks ago and I have since installed a King Throgg detector (Tyrion's big brother) on the front door to prevent his return.

My High Elves did not take any porcelain toilets or large buckets into battle and so were not well prepared for the Troll King's rampage. He literally puked his way to victory along with 5 of his buddies suffering from extreme "gut rot". I can only assume that late night doner kebabs and 10 pints were the order of the day on the evening before the battle.

The High Elves made a decent start by taking out all of the enemy's vanguard units (warhounds, and 2 marauder horsemen) with some ease, although it resulted in a mistake... one of the Marauder units was bait ! (at least that's the way it turned out). Here's what happened...

The Dragon Princes dispatched one mounted marauder unit to find themselves a bit too close for comfort to a unit of 6 trolls including king Throgg himself.  It should be said that the Trolls needed to charge 10 inches so it wasn't a foregone conclusion but once they rolled the 10 they needed death proceeded on a mega scale.

The Trolls dispatched the Dragon Princes in 2 combat rounds and even survived (what turned out to be an illegal) charge in the rear by a White Lion chariot (which rolled 1 impact hit !). I don't think the chaiort caused even 1 wound on the trolls. Once the trolls had finished puking their way to victory against those two units they moved on my back line which consisted of 15 Swordmasters protecting 2 repeaters and 2 units of archers and Teclis (who wisely decided to start moving out of the way). The rest of my force had moved slightly forward to take the incoming charges from marauders and warriors.

The Swordmasters were my only hope for my back line. They fought bravely and caused a few wounds but Throgg kept rolling high for his copious vomit attack and they were literally dissolved to death by stomach acid.

The archers were next and then the repeater, obviously none of them managed to do much damage to the Trolls. Teclis, who was now well out of the way, managed to cause a few wounds with his Lore of Fire spells but there were still about 3 trolls when they met up with my final unit of archers who valiantly caused a wound before being puked to death.

It was one heck of a Troll show. They had taken out 5 Dragon Princes, a Lion Chariot, 15 swordmasters, 2 repeaters and 2 units of archers single handedly by using nothing other than vomit attacks ! Only the Swordmasters and Teclis had managed to fell any of the bloated monsters.

My back line had been destroyed and the game was only heading in one direction - total annihilation !

Things looked completely different however in the center of the battle ground where White Lions and Phoenix Guard fought valiantly on and were cutting large swathes through the marauders and cutting down far more Chaos warriors than I thought they would be capable of. The High Elves magic had been severely curtailed by the loss of a wizard that, due to a miscast was now a level 0 non-spelllcaster and the loss of the Banner of Sorcery (carried by the Dragon Princes) which had granted the elves an extra +d3 power dice.

Nonetheless, Teclis remained very much part of the game. He successfully cast Flaming Sword of Rhuin 3 times on the Phoenix Guard which granted them +1 to wound for 6 combat turns and he had made quite a few fireball kills and wounds on the trolls. He was however, not really worth his 475 points cost in terms of damage but he was worth the points in terms of fun (from my perspective !)

The White Lions were eventually surrounded and cut down although they stood until the very last elf and were  worth their points cost.

The Phoenix Guard were the real heroes of the battle (from my point of view) and caused almost as much damage as the trolls had. I had "tooled up" this unit a bit and it included not only the BSB but a noble and some a nice magic item combo (to make sure they hung around). This is probably the best performance I have ever seen from a High Elf unit.  Here's what the unit consisted of:-

Noble (Hero) with Crown of Command [Stubborn, leadership 9], heavy armour, great weapon
Noble (Hero) BSB with battle banner [+d6 combat res], heavy armour, great weapon
13 Phoenix Guard + Full Command

Plastic Phoenix Guard unit

With always strikes first and initiative 6 they were almost always going to re-roll missed hits and with a strength 4 attack (and +1 to wound, due to Flaming Sword of Rhuin), they were going to cause a lot of damage. Note only that but due to their ward save, leadership 9 and stubborn and with the BSB for leadership re-rolls they were not going to go anywhere either.

The Phoenix Guard made a real mess of the marauders and chaos warriors and the enemy lost their general who was cut down when he turned to flee the onslaught. When it was clear that Chaos had taken the day only the Phoenix Guard and Teclis still stood (and the Trolls were hot on his heels !). For a bit of fun we put the Phoenix Guard in the center of the battlefield and surrounded them with all of the remaining chaos units (some warriors, marauders and two depleted units of knights). Get this... if the Phoenix Guard had rolled a 3 on their Battle Banner roll, they would have won the combat !  Alas, they rolled a 1 and then failed their leadership test (and I forgot to re-roll for the BSB) so they were cut down where they stood.

My summary:- Trolls are bad (in a good way) but, with the right support, Phoenix Guard are better !

GW's New plastic High Elves Review

Warhammer Fantasy Battle plastics are now second to none amongst all the various war gaming plastic models available in 28mm scale.

The level of detail is almost (but not quite) as good as metal models. The poses and postures all look great and a lot less "cartoony" than they once were in the 1990's but, thankfully, they still look "fantastical" in appearance and don't take themselves too seriously.

The High Elf models are amongst the best new releases from Games Workshop. I'm not that impressed by the way they have been painted (in terms of the colours chosen). Far too much blue, white and gold for my liking (especially the gold). Don't worry though, I've taken a good look at the plastic sprues and they all look excellent, in particular the White Lions (cloaks, pleasingly large axes and the excellent "landscape-oriented" embossed standard. The Phoenix Guard also have a very good standard depicting, unsurprisingly, a metallic looking phoenix raising from a flame in a "portrait" orientation, the standard also sports a flaming chalice on top !).

The weakest link (to my untrained eye) are the Dragon Princes. I like the look of them and 5 for £18 GBP is very good value for money but they are too "spikey" for my liking and they are not presented as well as they could be in my opinion because the dragon armour has been painted with too much bright blue.

Closer inspection of the Dragon Princes sprue does however reveal shed loads of model parts to choose from with regards to heads, and weapons and I really like the standard bearer.

Games Workshop are nowdays doing a superb job of promoting their range of models online. You will find pictures of the whole unit, individual photos of the command unit and a single "trooper" model, shots of the sprues, the boxed set cover and a decent description of all of the components. Things are getting better and better in the World of Warhammer :D

Some of the individual unit pictures are available on this blog here:-

New plastic Dragon Princes

New Dragon Princes (plastic) for advance order from Games Workshop

Plenty of modeling options available on this sprue (like the other new High Elf sprues) but personally, I might be removing some of the spikey bits and I won't be using as much blue & white paint (just my opinion).

New High Elf and Skaven Incoming !

Games Workshop have announced 2 new Special Character miniatures to be released on October 23rd 2010. The models are Prince Althran and Warlord Spinetail

These are special (so presumably limited) edition releases. Prince Althran is on foot so I guess his Griffon, named Sharpclaw, must have had his wings clipped on the Island of Blood !  :D

Island of Blood Sprue Photos

Games Workshop and Total War Gamer have posted some nice pics of all of the Sprues in the Island of Blood 8th edition starter boxed set.

There are 4 different sprues,. 5 sprues are included in the boxed set so you can 2 of one type of sprue and 1 each of the others. In summary, points to note:-
  • Some sprues are combined and contain Skaven and High Elf models so resellers who only want one of the army miniatures will need to cut what they want from the sprues before selling them on or swapping them.
  • The plastic models are largely complete, that is to say most consist of only 2 or 3 parts so they are easy to clip together (so minimal gluing)
  • Shields are already attached to both Sea Guard and Skaven Clanrats
  • There is a lot of detail on these miniatures so they should "paint up" very well indeed !
The War Store has the larger pics but Games Workshops photos are in a higher resolution and reveal a little bit more detail. Use your browser's Zoom functioon ( "Ctrl" and "+" in Google Chrome) for more definition.

Painted Island of Blood Miniatures

Some excellent close up shots of painted Island of Blood 8th edition box starter set models from Games Workshop

I found these on the Chest of Colors forum posted by Corvus (http://www.chestofcolors.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=110042#p110042) It's an excellent gaming website / forum for miniatures, painting and modeling. I thoroughly recommend it.

(Check out the Chest of Colors forum where you'll find a few more photos)

These are the best quality starter set miniatures that GW have ever released. The Griffon rider is fantastic as are the Ellyrian Reavers, the Rat Ogre and the Swordmasters.

Island of Blood 8th Edition Starter Set pictures

One of the Battle Reporter forum members has kindly posted an update with some nice big images of the new High Elf and Skaven miniatures (source: Warseer and BoLS). Both Skaven and High Elves are looking very impressive in the level of detail and the slightly more aggressive, dynamic war-like postures that some (but not all) of the models adopt.

Look at the size of this Griffon's Talons !!
