Best and Worst 8th Edition Armies

The strongest Warhammer Fantasy Battle Armies under the 8th edition rulebook - poll results. We had over 500 people voting and here's the outcome.

Note that: new Orcs & Goblins, Tomb Kings, Ogre Kingdoms and Vampire Count army books were released during the vote (so some people will have voted before seeing the new armies).

Voters were asked to choose the 5 best and worst WHFB armies.

I'm sure you'll want to draw your own conclusions, I'm just sorry for the poor old Beastmen because their army book wasn't released that long ago and yet they still come in second bottom in the ranking.

I think anyone who has played against the top 5 know they are disgustingly good, especially Warriors of Chaos (in my opinion).

A note to Games Workshop: I think it's time to bring on those Bretonnian and Wood Elf army books.

Best Fantasy Battle combat unit - WINNER

The Battle Reporter forum contest to find the best 500pt Warhammer combat unit was won by Telepfenion and his Warrior Priest, Empire Greatswords and Militia detachment combo.

It was a hard fought debate and the Herald of Khorne and 34 Bloodletters unit (by Matt Hollis) was snapping at Telepfenion' heels but he just about managed to parry their attacks to win the Award of...

Best and Worst 8th Edition Armies

So which is the strongest and weakest Warhammer 8th edition Fantasy Battle Army ?

The results for 2010 are almost in, you have 2 days left to vote. Here's the position at the moment.

High Elves, The Empire and Skaven are clearly on top and Wood Elves, Tomb Kings and Bretonnia are bringing up the rear.

The worst Fantasy Battle army vote is very clear with Wood Elves chosen by 60% of the respondents. Their brethren the High Elves were almost as popular for the best army vote gaining over 50% of all votes.

The poll closes on 1st Jan 2011 so please vote now if you haven't already (scroll down the page, you'll find the poll on the right sidebar).

Worst Warhammer Army (8th ed. fantasy battle rules)

The Empire is emerging as the best Warhammer Fantasy Battle Army under the 8th Edition rulebook.

So, let's find out which is the worst or lets's be kinder and say the "weakest army". It doesn't necessarily follow that the worst is the least voted for "best army" (if you know what I mean ?!) and because it's a slow news week let's go for another poll :)

Cast your votes (select 5 armies) !  :-

Best 8th edition Warhammer Army

Which Fantasy Battle armies are the most powerful under the 8th edition Warhammer rules ?

I've added a poll to the site where you can select the 5 Fantasy Battle Armies that you now think are the most powerful under the 8th edition rules.

You'll find the poll about half way down the page on the right (or just click the poll image on the right) and it lasts until the end of 2010 - so you can check back to see what the consensus is.

I'd really appreciate it if you would cast your votes.

Thanks folks,
Sigmar

I will post a link to the final result here.

It seems that about 20% of players are new to the game (10 games or less). All things being equal (and with the caveat that I'm not a statistician !) this seems to suggest that, on average, the gaming population could replace itself every 5 years. This actually seems quite high to me and implies that GW are quite reliant on their veteran gamers for business.

Do you calculate Victory Points ?

Well 55% say always or usually so make sure you take your calculator to the next battle :)

Almost 20% never bother totting up victory points which suggests to me that they're keeping alive the spirit of the "friendly" game (that's a relief !)

Once again the Vamps and the great of Ulthuan come out on top. The results were very similar to the poll about which army can beat Daemons. Interesting, Daemons of Chaos didn't take top spot which is suprising given the plaudits they are receiving on all the forums.

Warhammer Poll Results : number of characters used in 2000pt games, value of magical items, players game style.

Here are the most recent poll results. Some interesting reading confirming in my view that magical items are integral and quite essential in your army selection. Interestingly, many people do not take 4 characters into battle in a 2000pt game.

Over the course of 4 weeks we had about 100 votes for each answer. In future I might put polls up for a week or 2 longer for a more conclusive response.

Nice to see the old folks (of which I am a member !) hanging in there. I think the age profile for Warhammer Fantasy Battle is probably a a few years higher than 40k. Do you agree ?

2501-3000 18 (13%)
3001-4000 25 (18%)
4000+ 45 (34%)

Looks like we have some major collectors out there. I'm sure when I asked what size points game people played most often it was 2000pts so I guess people just like collecting and painting and having some alternative tactical options. There must be a lot of saddened soldiers out there who don't often get a fight ;)

how many figures have you painted in the last 12 months ?
26% 1-10 (30)

6% 200+ (wow !) (8)
4% 101-150 (5)
1% 150-200 (2)

It seems as though there are a lot of unpainted armies out there, unless the 49% who have painted 10 or less have already completed there armies. A whopping 6% said they had painted 200+ figures over the last 12 months but are they to be believed !?

how much have you spent on Warhammer miniatures over the last year (in US Dollars) ?

401-600 15 (15%)
601-1000 17 (17%)
1000+ (ouch !) 14 (14%)

The average spend is $474 or about £250 GBP *
* (I have assumed those spending over $1000 spent $1200 in total)

It seems that almost half of this blog's visitors have 1,2 or 3 gaming buddies which is probably to be expected. I was suprised to see so many people were members of clubs outside of Games Workshop though.

The very best Warhammer Army in the Fantasy Battle World ! (well, according to my blog readers)

I thought it might be fun to take all the recent poll results (ie. which army is best at:- movement, magic, shooting and combat) and combine all the votes to see which armies come out top and which are being ground into the dirt.

I suppose, it is just a small poll in a very big Warhammer World and despite being very unscientific (with no weightings at all and all tactics ignored) it still makes for interesting reading. Most of all it helps to "answer" the Warhammer Beginner question... wait for it...

The Best Warhammer Battle Army in Combat - hmmm... interesting

This one is quite interesting for me. I have never faced the Hordes of Chaos army in combat, although I know all about their reputation (and have the army book of course). I was fully expecting Bretonnians to come in at 1st or 2nd, down in 6th place seems too low to me. I'm also suprised at Vampire Counts in 8th position ! I know that a lot of undead are dispatched back to their grave during the course of a game but they are still a formidable force in combat due to their continual ability to raise more troops and the fact they never rout.

The Best Warhammer Army at Shooting - Dwarfs vs Wood Elves (it was close, very close !)

This result came as quite a suprise, I thought Wood Elves could walk to the finish and still win. It wasn't so, the Dwarf Army appears to be well admired for it's ranged weaponry talents. I Guess that, once again, Dwarf runes have a big part to play in this. The Empire also got very close to that top spot - could it be the infamous Hellblaster ?

The Best Magic Warhammer Army - no Warhammer Race can beat High Elves !

Let's face it, there was no way that High Elves were going to lose this vote. Interestingly Vampire Counts were the runners up just beating Lizardmen out of second place. For anybody out there wondering how Dwarfs did so well... we included all magic items, so the answer is Dwarfish runes.

The fastest moving Warhammer Army - Wood Elves win

Wood Elves were well and truly voted to be the most maneuverable (and therefore I guess the fastest moving army in the Warhammer game). It's interesting that The Empire rate so lowly, surely, as an army, they are quicker than Vampire Counts ?
