Blood in the Badlands a new Warhammer Campaign

Games Workshop are really pushing Fantasy Battle this year. The rate of army releases and what with this supplement and the excellent Storm of Magic we've never had it better in terms of new content and miniatures (plus Finecast for the connoisseur).

I have no idea what this campaign supplement is like because it's only just been announced as an Advance Order - released on 3rd Dec 2011. It looks like a pretty cool Christmas present to me which is why I've already asked my wife for it (and it's only £20 GBP - a smart pricing move by GW for Xmas!)

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/armySubUnitCats.jsp?catId=cat440004a

Here's what GW have to say:-

"Blood in the Badlands is a campaign system for Warhammer that enables you to unleash your army against your foes and carve out a corner of the notorious Badlands for yourself. As well as the campaign system itself, the book contains rules that can be used in any Warhammer game, form massive multi-player scenarios featuring new magic items and spells, rules for underground battles and a complete siege expansion. Blood in the Badlands also features the tale of eight intrepid hobbyists as they play the campaign, including detailed battle reports, glorious army showcases and turn-by-turn accounts of their expanding empires.

This 96-page full-colour hardback Warhammer Supplement contains rules for siege battles in Warhammer, underground battles, new scenarios, magic items and Cataclysm spells. It also has a full set of rules that can be used with the Mighty Empires expansion set."

Badlands WFB Campaign book cover pdf

I notice that GW make a lot of effort these days to loosely couple all their products which is nice because it means everything integrates nicely but is also optional (except for the core rulebook that is !)

Warhammer Storm of Magic Expansion - 9th July 2011 release

Calling all Fantasy Battle fans... the Storm of Magic book could be a major Warhammer game changer and it's out on Saturday 9th July !

Storm of Magic Rules pdf pic
If the Storm of Magic rules turn out to be as good as the presentation and the miniatures and terrain & scenery that are being released with it then we could be in for a treat.

It looks like Games Workshop are putting everything into this launch, there's a lot of new "kit", miniatures (including Finecast, some large monsters and new spell casters) and everything so far looks to be top quality.

Whatever you think of Games Workshop (and I know there are been a few dissenting voices recently), you cannot question their commitment to the hobby and the speed at which they introduce great new Fantasy battle products.

I can't write much of a review right now other than to say that I've been very happy with what I've seen and read on their website and the look of the new miniatures and even more so the terrain such as the portal and skull throne. The inside of the rulebook looks promising from it's appearance at least and I really like the cover too. So far, so good. I'll write again once I've got my hands on a copy to let you know if GW have come up trumps or slayed my beloved game !

For the meantime, enjoy the pics below, there's loads more at the Games Workshop advance order page that you can get to through the home page (www.games-workshop.com) - including sprue pics and miniature close ups and also some intro and chat on the GW "What's New Today" blog page.

BTW, in case you want a quick summary...

Storm of Magic places the emphasis firmly on monsters and devastating "cataclysm spells". We must hope and pray that the design team have retained a nice balance and kept the relevancy of your bog standard foot sloggers rather than going for over-the-top power mongers everywhere across the battlefield.

New Fantasy Battle Expansion

Warhammer Storm of Magic expansion (for Fantasy Battles) incoming !

I'm not sure what this is all about although it looks like quite an exciting development. Until I can find out more you'd better read what Games Workshop have to say below. It's out in July 2011 and is coming with a load of new monsters and magic...cool heh :)
WFB Storm of Magic set

"Incoming: Storm of Magic

Storm of Magic - when the eight winds howl...

The Winds of Magic are tumultuous. Drawn by Morrslieb, they are prone to rise from a strong gale into a howling tempest. And when they do no kingdom or realm is safe.

Monsters awaken from their slumber and are summoned from their lairs at the bidding of sorcerous masters. Armies assemble, ready to defend their borders or seize the opportunity to gain limitless power. It is in these desperate times tenuous pacts between wizards and creatures of darkness are sealed to create alliances never thought possible.

A time of doom and great deeds is at hand. Will you rise to meet the storm?

Announcing the impending arrival of Storm of Magic, the latest and largest Expansion for Warhammer, the Game of Fantasy Battles. Launched in July 2011, Storm of Magic describes what happens when great eldritch maelstroms roil across the lands. Magic becomes far more powerful and there is a whole range of Cataclysm spells to cast, unleashing untold devastation on the enemy. Arcane Fulcrums burst from the ground, not only acting as loci for the swirling energies that pervade a battle fought amidst the Storm of Magic, but changing the way a Warhammer tabletop looks and interacts with your armies. With such things so crucial to your Storm of Magic games a new range of Warhammer scenery and Wizards will soon be released in time for you to wage cataclysmic battles.

Then there are the monsters. When the Winds of Magic blow with such strength, the fell creatures of the world gravitate towards the tempest, slithering from deep tunnels or emerging from mountain lairs.

With the new Expansion allowing you to use so many different creatures there are a whole host of new monstrous plastic kits on their way. Citadel's queen of creatures, Trish Morrison, has spent the last few years in her own lair preparing for the new monsters to be unleashed upon the world and you can see two brief glimpses of what is to come below:

Storm of Magic expansion set
Storm of Magic expansion set

July is still a few months away; we are in the calm before the storm so now is the time to prepare. Bolster your forces, prepare your regiments and summon your wizards in time for the ultimate war. Keep checking White Dwarf and the website for updates, for when the storm hits nowhere will be safe!"

Warhammer 8th Edition Battle Reports

Fantasy Battle Reports for Warhammer 8th edition rulebook.

I set up a new site some time ago for Bat Reps for the lastest Warhammer rulebook (ie 8th edition). Well, now I have it properly up and running (and it can be viewed in all internet browsers - which it couldn't before!) I thought I'd better let everyone know.

I'm trying to pick the best battle reports I can find and I expect to be adding a couple every week (including still videos (ie. slideshows with narration / audio commentary), real time videos, battle stories and of course the traditional maps and photo battle reps. There are 20 reports on the site right now.

Warhammer Fantasy Bat Reps picture

Here are the key features of the new-ish site:-

  • A running tally of the best Warhammer armies (% wins or draws)
  • A table to let you choose the armies involved in the battle.
  • An intro before each battle which gives you an idea why I added it to the site.
  • A widget to allow you to rate each report.
  • A list of the most popular reports.
  • A link to Battle Chronicler the excellent (and free !) Battle Reporting software.
  • Links back to all my other blogs and to 190+ 7th edition battle reports.
  • Loads of links to other Warhammer fan-sites in the blogroll
  • A list of the most popular battle reports
  • Stacks of adverts for eBay Warhammer Fantasy miniatures and terrain / scenery.

Last but not least Facebook and Google Follow widgets so you can follow the blog (if you have a Google account / gmail) and join the "Warhammer Battle Reporters" Facebook group where I post all my lastest Warhammer and blog news.

I hope you like it. Please let me know what you think by posting a comment here or on the bat rep site.

PS. there's a permanent link to the 8th edition and the 7th edition site at the top of this blog under the eBay adverts (you'll see the latest battle reports count for each site). Note: 7th ed site is still being added to.

GW's 8th Edition Rulebook Guide - by Jervis Johnson

A very nice Warhammer Fantasy Battle rules summary and "things to look out for" guide from Games Workshop - the "Steadfast" articles.

The thing which really startled me when I read this guide was how much I had actually missed or not properly absorbed on my first reading of the rulebook. I guess the only way to really get going with the new rules is to get a few small battles under your belt while paying a lot of attention to the changes.

It's an 8 page article split into 3 sections. The guide really is excellent and well worth some reading time.

Here's one of the tips I missed:-

"...Dispel scolls are now limited to one per army" - how did I miss that ?! - no more caddies !

WFB 8th Edition FAQ / Errata PDF released

A new Warhammer Fantasy Battle 8th edition rulebook Errata (amendments) and FAQ (clarifications) has just been released by Games Workshop.

I haven't even got to the stage where I'm actually questioning the rulebook yet (I'm still trying to overwrite my 7th edition memory bank !) However, it looks like some other people have and Games Workshop have responded. Sadly, there are also some corrections to the new rules but not too many.

You can find the 6 page pdf at the foot of the Warhammer Army Errata / FAQ page below (copy link into your browser):-

8th Edition Warhammer Rulebook Changes

A summary review of the Warhammer Fantasy 7th to 8th Edition rulebook changes

I found this on www.giftsforgeeks.org.uk/blog/?p=99 thanks to Aaron, one of the Battle Reporter Facebook members. It's an excellent summary, all thanks and credit to giftsforgeeks.org.uk.

"The Geek Guide to 8th Edition

The 8th edition rulebook sees some of the biggest changes on the Warhammer battlefield for the best part of a decade. So here for my sanity here is a quick guide of the main rules changes.

Movement
  • Charges are now random; infantry now charge their movement rate plus 2d6”.
  • Cavalry and fliers roll 3d6” and choose the highest 2 rolls
  • You can now pre-measure before a charge
  • Charges must move straight forward, but are allowed one 90 degrees turn for free. Attackers than align with the defenders.
  • March blocking works as before. However, the if you pass a Ld test you can march anyway
  • If you flee through an enemy unit or terrain you are not destroyed. Instead you take a dangerous terrain test like in 40k.

Magic
  • Wizard levels now add to your casting roll and do not generate power dice
  • Players can switch between casters at any time
  • Every magic phase your army generates 2d6 power dice. The highest roll is the number of dispel dice
  • Each wizard may generate an extra dispel/power die for the pool if they roll a 6. You may never have more than 12 power or dispel dice
  • You cast as before, but if your total is less than 3 you fail to cast. Bonuses do not affect this!
  • If you fail to cast a spell the wizard can not cast again this phase
  • Miscasts on a double 1 are gone. However, if you roll an irresistible force the spell is cast as in 7th ed and the caster suffers a miscast on a really nasty table!
  • Dispels work as before your wizards. Irresistible dispels do not cause a miscast
  • Wizards add their level to the dispell roll
  • Bound spells now need power dice to cast. You need to roll above its power level
  • If you cast your bound item or spell with irresistible force the item is destroyed. If the bound spell is casted as an innate ability the model cannot cast again
  • Wizards may use bound items or spells if you failed to cast a spell earlier, however, you do not add your magic level to the roll.

Shooting
  • The first two ranks of a unit may now fire
  • If a model is more than 50% obscured the shooting unit suffer cover modifiers.
  • Strength 1 attacks can now wound toughness 10 models (this applies to combat as well)
  • Models can take armour and invulnerable or regeneration saves. You can not have a ward and regeneration. Bad times for Dark Elf characters and plaguebearers! This also applies in combat.

Close Combat
  • Combat order is done on initiative. You no longer go first if you charge.
  • The second rank of infantry can now fight, but with only one attack.
  • Ranks are still counted in sets of 5. However, if you take a rank of 10 the third rank can also fight with 1 attack.
  • Combat results are done as 7th ed except for, outnumber is gone, and your rank bonus is calculated on how many you outnumber your enemy by, up to a maximum of 3.You now receive +1 to your combat result on the turn you charge.
  • To negate the enemies rank bonus you require at least 10 models in the flank or rear.
  • If you outnumber the enemy in ranks you are stubborn (now called steadfast in combat). Infantry blocks are now extremely tough
  • You can now reform when defeated in combat. However, you must pass a leadership test that is modified by the amount you lost the break test by.

Special rules

Loads of new rules that models don’t exist for. Hmmm….
  • Templates no longer partial. Every model the template touches is hit.
  • Breath weapons are now one use only, however, you can use it in combat to get 2d6 hits at the strength of the weapon
  • Fast cavalry now have a vanguard rule which means they can move 12” before the battle begins. They cannot charge in the first turn
  • Flyers only move 10” but may march
  • Flying cavalry count as fast cavalry
  • Large targets are as before. However, if a battle standard or general is on a large target the range of their abilities is increased to 18”
  • Magic resistance now adds to your ward against magic. So magic resistance 1 adds 1 to your ward save against magical spells.
  • Fear has been toned down. It only affects close combat. When fighting a fear causing unit you must pass a Ld test or fight at Ws 1
  • Skirmishers no longer see 360 and they move as normal troops. However, they get unlimited reforms and may fire on the march
  • Terror causing creatures create fear in fear causing units. If you are charged by a terror causing unit you must pass a panic check or flee.
  • Bows may volley fire. This means half the models behind the first two ranks may fire
  • Scouts may now deploy up to 12” away of the enemy, but may not charge first turn
  • Battle standards now give all units re-rolls for all leadership tests

Troop Types
  • Things such as trolls, ogres and minotaurs now count as monstrous infantry. They now fight in ranks of three and can have up to 3 supporting attacks!
  • They also receive a stomp attack hit at their basic strength. This stomp attack always strikes last and is only for models in base to base contact with the enemy.
  • Cavalry charge with their movement plus 3D6” minus the lowest roll
  • Cavalry may also now assault buildings, but their mounts do not fight and they may not garrison a building
  • Monsters get 1d6 stomp attacks
  • Chariots are now not destroyed by high strength hits. They take wounds as normal

Weapons

Lots of changes due to the new special rules.
  • Main change is that using a combat weapon and shield and to the front does not add to your armour. It gives plus one to your invulnerable save instead
  • War Machines - When shooting at war machines the machine is hit not the crew. Guess ranges are gone. Now you can just point and shoot!

Terrain

There are now 16 pages of rules on terrain. In the new book the Warhammer battlefield is full of terrain. Here are the highlights;
  • If you march through terrain you generally have to take a dangerous terrain check as on the current 40k rules. Chariots take 1d6 wounds.
  • Units in forests do not get the steadfast rule. However, lone infantry characters and skirmishers become stubborn in forests.
  • You may now march into buildings and charge them.
  • You can deploy warmachines in buildings. Otherwise most the rules for building are the same as in the 7th edition.

The Battle
  • There are now 6 standard battles for Warhammer, which should spice things up
  • Each one of them states you have to have d6 plus 4 terrain pieces
  • To win you need to score over twice the amount of victory points your opponent has scored. Or it is a draw. - correction by Sigmar (as mentioned by White Dwarf July 2010, page 74):- there is a mistake in the rulebook... you need double your enemy's victory points for a "crushing victory" but only 100 pts more than your enemy for a win.
  • Victory conditions vary on the battle.
  • You now only score 25 points for capturing a standard.
  • You score a 50 point bonus if you defeat an enemy character with a champion.

The Army Composition

Along with all the rules changes affecting your army choice there are also the following limitations:-
  • Only up to 25% of your points total may be spent lords
  • Only up to 25% of your points may be spent on heroes
  • At least 25% of your points must be spent on core. You must field at least 3 non-character units.
  • Up to 50% of your points can be spent on special and you can only have up to 3 of the same unit. Unless you play 3000 points or more then the limit is raised to 6
  • Up to 50% of your points can be spent on rare and you can only have up to 2 of the same unit. Unless you play 3000 points or more then the limit is raised to 4
  • This leaves the commander with many tough decisions. Big blocks on infantry are tough to kill. Lords are in limited by points, but not in number. Artillery are more accurate and shooting units more deadly. Monsters and ogre sized models are scary. While skirmishers/ fast cavalry are fast indeed!
As I say the only way to find out what works is in the field of battle!"

Warhammer Fantasy 8th Edition Rules - VIDEO

A video commentary from Games Workshop on some of the new rules for Warhammer Battle 8th edition and the thinking behind them (by Jervis Johnson)

It's only really an overview, there is not a lot of detail on individual rules but it's an interesting watch nonetheless.

The emphasis is definitely on all out warfare.

Warhammer Fantasy Battle 8th Edition Reviews

Lengthy reviews of the new Warhammer Fantasy Battle Rulebook edition 8 (out on July 10th 2010)

Baddice.co.uk and waaaghcast.blogspot.com have both released lengthy chats about the new rules, the differences and their opinion on the new WFB Rulebook.

These are long podcasts and I haven't had a chance to listen to all of it yet so I can't give you my opinion but I thought you might like to listen for yourself and form your own anyway.

You can go to the sites and stream or download the podcasts or use the mp3 links below which should play the mp3s in your browser.

Warhammer Fantasy Battle Edition 8 rulebook - Official GW announcement !

Games Workshop have released the cover art and the introduction to the new Fantasy Battle rulebook - 8th edition.

No sooner had I posted the latest rumour of a new book in July than GW send out an official announcement - maybe they watch my site for timing their releases :)

Anyway, here it is and it looks fantastic. It looks quite Empire vs Chaos which I guess is the central theme around the Warhammer World and quite fitting. I presume the "flames" coming off the Warhammer are the twin tails of the ominous comet that I think signifies something (was it the arrival of Sigmar ? I'll have to check). Anyway, here you go, something official at last.

Here's the full text with the official announcement...

"The Warhammer world is a place riven by relentless warfare and the corrupting power of dark magic. It’s a place where vile creatures and titanic monsters roam the lands, where vast armies of evil warriors unleash slaughter upon their victims and only the unceasing valour of the forces of Order prevent the whole world slipping away into chaos and death.

Amidst this tapestry of conflict and carnage are races fair and foul, warriors chivalrous and brutal. These are the combatants who fight for dominance of the world. From the blasted north come warmongering tribes of Chaos Warriors, armour-clad barbarians who have thrown their lot in with the Dark Gods of Chaos. In the Badlands gather the greenskinned marauders known as the Orcs and Goblins, vicious, brutal creatures whose insatiable lust for war grows almost as quickly as their vast numbers. Beneath the cities of the civilised realms nestle the repulsive ratmen, subhuman creatures whose machinations spread disease and distrust – these are the Skaven and they wish only to destroy and dominate all others. Even the forests of the Old World are not safe, for the trees themselves are things of malign presence and the Beastmen dwell within, the children of Chaos – braying beasts who crave slaughter and the chance to enact their savagery on the civilised races.

The Warhammer world is a place where you must bury your dead deeply, for Necromancers and Vampires raise the legions of undeath in their war against the living. Far away in the south the legendary kings of a long-dead kingdom now awaken, leaving their vast tomb cities to wage war upon all under the sun, their skeletal legions a chilling parody of their once glittering majesty.

All these examples of horror are enough to cause weaker hearts to quail, but there are those who resist the darkness, kingdoms and realms that fight for survival. The Empire, greatest of all the nations of Men musters regiments of brave soldiers. Armed with faith in Sigmar, their warrior god, and with tempered steel and black powder weapons they defend their lands. South and east of the Empire lies Bretonnia, a land of chivalry and noble tradition. There, bold knights harken the call of their mighty king and ride out to crusade against the monsters of the Old World. Dwarfs, in their mountain strongholds, are as unyielding as the stone around them as they battle above and below the ground. Loyal allies, but terrible enemies, the Dwarfs are brave-hearted and steadfast as they protect their once-great realm.

In far-off lands the Elves fight out their bitter blood feud against one another – a mighty civilisation that spanned the continents but is now riven with strife and betrayal. Perhaps the greatest warriors in all the world, their numbers are now few and too many of those that remain are lost each day in the unending war between Ulthuan and Naggaroth.

This is a world where victory and death rest upon a knife-edge and the fate of the world, be it damnation or salvation, will soon be decided.

Warhammer, the Game of Fantasy Battles will be released in July. The preparation for this date has been a time of great excitement here in the Studio as we have lavished detail, care and attention onto the rulebook and the fantastic Citadel miniatures range that it accompanies.

Now is the time to gather your regiments, paint your armies and prepare for a battle like never before. If you have a Warhammer army, dust it off and finish up those last few models. If you’ve always been tempted to collect a force there really has never been a better time to start! Warhammer is coming and it’s going to be great."

I can't wait !

Warhammer, the Game of Fantasy Battles - 8th edition release date

It's being widely reporetd that games Workshop are releasing the 8th edition of the Warhammer Rulebook in July 2010 - now confirmed as July 10th 2010.

There are also some Tomb Kings rumours circulating (more later, once I have found the source) and apparently more Orcs and Goblins are scampering (if that's the right word ?!) our way in May.

It all seems to be happening at once !

I'm looking forward to reading my edition in the summer sun with a couple of beers and some barbequed sausages :D

New Warhammer Fantasy Battle pdf 2009 errata published

Games Workshop answer some of the more obscure Warhammer FAQs

with a couple of unexpected answers (as far as I'm concerned), like the response to this question...

"Q. If a character declares a lone charge out of a unit against an enemy armed with missile weapons, and the enemy elects to Stand and Shoot, whom do they target with their Stand and Shoot reaction – the character or his unit?"

A. They will target the character’s unit, and if the unit panics and flees, it will take the character with them.

Here's the Warhammer Rulebook pdf errata published January 2009

here's all the other Warhammer Army errata pdfs

Warriors of Chaos Army List rules pdf (interim rules published in White Dwarf)

Warriors of Chaos Army List pdf

Note:- this is NOT the new army book but the rules that were published in White Dwarf after the Daemons of Chaos rules were released. They were published as an interim measure until the new Warriors of Chaos Army book was published in October 2008.

They are useful to give you a rough idea of what the new army book is like.
