The Empire - Warhammer Army Selection Tactics (spearmen vs halberdiers)

Here are some bits and pieces of basic advice about Empire army choices.

Spearmen vs Halberdiers.

Several moons ago, while selecting a 2500 pt army, I was torn between whether I should go for Halberdiers or Spearmen.

I performed some mock unit skirmishes against some Orc & Goblin troops (that I would soon be facing on the field of battle)

In a nutshell, the halberdiers consistently came out on top (just) when compared to the spearmen and my battle conditions were taken into account. It was the presence or absense of spearmen shields (at +1 pts) that made the difference and the likelihood of being able to charge or having to receive a charge. I loaded up a an Excel spreadsheet and got a similar answer.

Unless you have a compelling reason to take spearmen, like expecting to have to receive lots of cavalry charges, opt for halberdiers instead.
