Which are the Best ? - Handgunnners / Crossbows / Thunderers / Quarellers / Bolt Thrower / High Elves / Wood Elf Waywatchers / Glade Guard or Peasants
I'm not so sure because after playing Dwarfs and Empire armies they seem pretty good at shooting me as well !
So, I decided to so some analysis into this.
I pretended there was an enemy unit with a toughness of 3, armour save 5+, no ward save. Then I tested some of the popular missile units against this unit (from maximum missile range until they got into charge range). (To even everything out I divided the results by the points cost of the missile troops)
Here are the results (best value for money units at the top of the list)
(pts) & unit
(14.0) High Elf Bolt Thower
(12.6) Dwarf Quarellers
(10.4) Empire Crossbows
(9.7) Empire Hand gunners
(8.3) Bretonnian Peasants
(7.9) Dwarf Tunderers
(7.3) Wood Elf Glade Guard
(6.6) High Elf Archers
(4.7) Wood Elf Way Watchers
It makes for interesting reading doesn't it !
It has to be mentioned though that this doesn't take into account any other abilities other than bow fire. Also, it favours gun powder weapons because I was using an enemy with a 5+ armour save, if the enemy had no armour save the Elves would be higher in the list. Also, bear in mind other factors like being able to move faster than the enemy and thus fire more.

According to your info in italics, you started the enemy further away if the ranged weapon had a bigger range (so for Dwarf Quarellers you started the enemy 30" away, and for the High Elf RBT you started them 48" away.)
This would seem to skew the results by almost 50% in some cases, since range has no where near that big an effect in real games of warhammer. (In your example, if I understand correctly, the RBT would have gotten way more than twice as many opportunities to fire than any 24" weapon.)
Yes you are correct, this will favour the longer range units. However, that's the objectve. It's not a straight comparison of a single volley but a comparison of the relative "value" of the unit (that's why I divided the result by the unit's point cost.
I appreciate your feedback though and will do a direct 1-1 comparison in future.
Thanks and all the best,
Sigmar
I'm with Alec on this one, anything beyond range 30" is of no value as no one is ever going to charge at a RBT that started 48" away.
Even the difference between 24 and 30 inch is dubious due to first turns etc.
Thanks for the comment N1AK.
I probably wasn't clear enough when I orginally outlined the comparison. I will need to go back to my spreadsheet to see what I did again.
If memory serves me, I was comparing the missile fire not on a like by like comparison but with their ranges taken into account. On the basis that RBTs for example will have more opportunities to fire due to their range. So it is not a fair comparison until you divide the stats by the points cost, then it becomes a fair reflection of value in a battle.
Wheh I have more time I'll dig out my original analysis and provide all the stats etc.
