New Skaven Models Photos and Review

Games Workshop have just posted the new 2nd wave of Skaven miniatures for advance order for 2011.

Firstly, I should say that I'm not a huge Skaven fan, I generally prefer the "good" races in Warhammer - except Vampires - I only field good blood bank giving Vampires though ;-)

Having said that I hope to give a unbiased brief review of the models and other Skaven products on offer.

So, here goes...

There are 6 new Skaven models on sale, a 13 card deck of Skaven magic cards and a book on Skaven heraldry and uniforms (heraldry ? it just doesn't seem right !)

The new miniatures are of excellent quality. There is probably as much if not more detail on these models than any previously released. Not only are the models superbly sculpted in terms of detail but they all look very Skaveny. The character poses are superb and the machineries of war look exactly as you would expect to see from a bunch of verminous, pestilent ridden critters :D

The catapult can also be made as a warp lightning cannon which should mean there are plenty of bitz you can hold onto to customize units or even scratch build a new Clan Skryre machination.

There are two completely new models for the weapon teams that you wouldn't have been able to deploy before (with the appropriate model). They are the Warp Grinder and the Doom Flayer, both models are superb. The same goes for Ikit Claw (a Lord level 3 wizard) and Tretch Craventail [pictured above] (a useful utility hero level unit leader, for flank and rear attacks, who has a handy 4+ ward save and a 1 dice reroll).

I'm not so fond of the Abomination although it certainly is an abomination ! It looks like a pain to paint but good fun to assemble (hopefully, there are lots of spare parts and choices). Games Workshop have kindly included sprue shots of the new miniatures (I reckon they followed my lead when they saw the good feedback after I posted ones of the new Vampire Counts models many moons ago !) Anyway, it's nice to have a good zoom in view of the sprues.

The new Skaven models definitely have an evolving "Steam-Punkish" look to them. Personally I like it although I suspect it will not appeal to some of the Skaven vets (I mean veterans !) out there.

I can't tell you a lot about the heraldry book other than what you can see in the pics. It seems a bit strange to call it heraldry which I would really only associate with Bretonnians and maybe The Empire. Still, the fluff always goes down well with the devoted ratty hobbyist so I guess it will be received well.

The Skaven Magic cards look cool and I'd definitely add them to my wish list if I were a Skaven man (errr... I mean rat). Overall, a great release of miniatures, the plastic miniatures have come on massively over the past few years. Let me know what you think of them.

I think if I were to start Warhammer from the very beginning that Skaven would be in my top 3 if I were choosing an "evil" army - I actually consider Skaven to be more of a mischievous pain in the backside than "evil" which I would have to reserve for Daemons... and Dwarfs of course :)  Skaven certainly have an enviable choice of models now and a broader range of tactical options than they had in the 7th edition.

Here's the GW advance orders link where you'll find loads more pics, prices and details :-

Best and Worst 8th Edition Armies

So which is the strongest and weakest Warhammer 8th edition Fantasy Battle Army ?

The results for 2010 are almost in, you have 2 days left to vote. Here's the position at the moment.

High Elves, The Empire and Skaven are clearly on top and Wood Elves, Tomb Kings and Bretonnia are bringing up the rear.

The worst Fantasy Battle army vote is very clear with Wood Elves chosen by 60% of the respondents. Their brethren the High Elves were almost as popular for the best army vote gaining over 50% of all votes.

The poll closes on 1st Jan 2011 so please vote now if you haven't already (scroll down the page, you'll find the poll on the right sidebar).

New Skaven Models Incoming (2011) !

Some pictures of the next wave of Skaven miniatures from Games Workshop. I like the look of the Hellpit Abominations and the foul mini Doomwheel thingy (!?) I hope it's not as devastating as it's bigger cousin !

I don't have any details about release dates, prices as yet but rest assured, as soon as I find out, I'll let you know. The below are from a Spanish forum called http://forofreakfactory.mforos.com/ (pay them a visit and thank them for sharing).

Edit: 20th Dec: one of the Warhammer Battle Reporter Facebook Group members tells me that the Cannon / Catapult is a single kit that can be used to create either model (thanks John-Paul).

Warhammer Forge at Games Day 2010

While trying to delve into the new Chaos Dwarf miniature news I tracked down this YouTube video by Beasts of War with lots of new / work in progress miniature pictures (incl. 40k).

Marienburg Land Ship model picture
The model to the right is a Marienburg Land Ship (?!)

The video shows some of the new Warhammer Work in Progress models from Forgeworld and Warhammer Forge which, apparently, is a sub-division of Forgeworld specifically aimed at Warhammer model development. The interviewer also says he has heard rumours of Warhammer introducing titan scale units into Fantasy Battle in an Apocalypse style way. Hmmm... it's the first time I've heard that and it's quite intriguing. Now I have to find out what Apocalypse is all about to get a feel for what they're talking about !

Anyway, the video is worth a watch so I thought I'd share with you. All credit to Beasts of War.

New Chaos Dwarf War Machine Models

Warhammer Forge, which I'm lead to believe is some kind of Games Workshop spin-off are releasing some awesome new miniatures for Fantasy Battle in 2011.

I'm not sure how I missed these pictures from Games Day 2010 but I'm pleased I spotted them in the end. What a superb line up of new Chaos Dwarf miniatures !

I'm pretty sure GW said they would not be producing a Chaos Dwarfs Warhammer Army book but with the quality of these miniatures they might find that the demand for one will rapidly grow. Here's an excellent unofficial Dwarfs of Chaos Army book for anyone interested - I believe it's been sanctioned for use in a large number of tournaments too - although probably not GW ones (does anybody know for sure ?)

Credit to ifelix.co.uk for posting the pics (http://www.ifelix.co.uk/phofant9.html - for more photos). I'm not sure if they are his or belong to someone else but thanks anyway ifelix.

I'm not sure how they would sort out the profile stats for this collection of models.  It looks like the Steam Engine, Bombard and Magma Cannon can be deployed as a single "weapons train". I guess you could also have any combination including the steam engine - which would be required to pull the rolling stock. The Skullcracker looks like a single model war machine.

Kings of War Rules - Free PDF

Mantic Games offer their Fantasy gaming rulebook as a free PDF download

Kings of War rules by Mantic Games
I spotted Mantic Games a few months back and have been keeping an eye on their progress. They produce some pretty neat miniatures (the same scale as WFB models), some of which you cannot actually find in Games Workshop, a Vampire on a winged Hellsteed for instance.

Their Fantasy World is not as rich as the Warhammer World but it's early days and they're doing a great job of expanding on their range of miniatures and adding their own fantasy feel to their product line. Importantly, their range of models are very good value and they represent a cheap entry point into Fantasy gaming.

The rules are very simple, with 3 phases (move, shoot & melee, there is no magic) and 6 unit profile stats (speed, melee, ranged, defence, attacks and nerve, plus some special unit attributes) and are pleasingly easy to follow. There is a notable absence of a general magical ruleset, although individuals do have some magical abilities which will disappoint some but I suspect they might think more about that in future. Kings of War also has a couple of neat twists not seen in Warhammer, such as timed turns (?!)

Allesio Cavatore created this ruleset for Mantic Games, some of you may recognize his name because he also designed the Vampire Counts Warhammer Fantasy Battle army book.

The rules (12 pages, 1.34meg):-

The army lists (currently Elves, Dwarfs and Undead, 2pages, 0.13meg):-

Mantic are keen to recieve your feedback and you can contribute directly to future rules development on their forum here:- www.manticgames.com/Forum.html

I haven't tried the rules out yet but am quite keen to give them a shot. I think, at this stage, they are probably a bit light on detail so I suspect there will be plenty of questions to be asked but they look like a great entry point for newcomers to fantasy wargaming. The rulebook is only 12 pages long ! It just goes to show what can be achieved by taking a pragmatic no-nonsense design approach.

They have a strong presence on eBay too:- Mantic Miniatures on eBay

Well done so far to Mantic and even more well done for getting those rules online at no cost to encourage participation and feedback from, I have little doubt, their quickly growing fan base.
