Ogre Rhino Cavalry -

Surely this fella should be called "Ogre on Rhinosaurus" ? He's named an "Ogre War Rhino" but I have to say that he looks a bit more "Dino" than "Rhino" to me. Still, it's a very cool mini.

The whole model is excellent and the Ogre especially so - the facial features are perfect.

Anyway, here you go... if you're in the business of Ogres on Dinosaurs.... He'd make a brilliant Ogre Tribe "King" - watch your back Greasus !

Official GW Ogre Kingdoms Release

Games Workshop are churning out Warhammer Battle (and 40k) army books and miniatures like a bat out of Sylvania these days and Finecast is the "order of the day" Mawhahaha ! Release date is 3rd September 2011

Warhammer Ogre PDF Army book
The Ogre Army has been well and truly recast as Finecast in this release. Gorgers, Yhetees, all of the Maneaters, Sabretusks, The Hunter, the Tyrant, Skrag the Slaughterer (my personal favourite) and good old Greasus Goldtooth plus of course the new characters; Bragg the Gutsman, Firebelly and Golgfag (a new mini but very, very old character) even some gnoblar trappers got the treatment !

This is going to be a Fantasy Battle modellers & painters paradise :)

There are loads of pics in the Games Workshop Advance Orders page plus all of the usual unit fluff, boxed set details and prices. There's also a 96 page hardback army book which, amazingly, I almost forgot to mention !

From GW website:-

"They first arrived from the east, stomping across the world, heedless of borders, barging through even hostile territory as if they already owned it. Although they have established kingdoms in the Mountains of Mourn, they wander where they please, extorting what they want and taking by force all that isn't freely given. They war constantly, not out of malice, but for profit and sustenance - for such are the rights of the powerful and strong. They are the Ogres, and to stand before their collected might is to confront a landslide."

From what I've seen so far this army looks amazing in terms of models and presentation. I have faith in the rulebook too because the design team have made come in for very little criticism over the last few releases.

New Ogre Army Book Photos

Some new miniature pics from, I presume, the Ogre Kingdoms Army book (or maybe White Dwarf).

Anyway, they look quite cool and I thought they were worth sharing. Someone asked an interesting question, which I have been reflecting upon...

"how exactly does the Ogre Thundertusk (the mammoth monster thingy) manage to eat ?" Hmmm... good question, answers anyone ?

Ogre Mournfang Cavalry & Hunter (?)

Some more Ogre Kingdom miniature photos; the cavalry model looks better from the side view and a close up of a fairly cool mounted Hunter (I think ?) with a Blood Vulture

I've come across a few posts purporting to know about some OK Army rulebook changes/additions which I'll share when I get a chance to organise them all and try to validate the sources.

New Ogre Kingdoms Army Miniatures

Ogre model photos from Games Workshop (I presume !?) - leaked or copied by an insider maybe ?

Anyway, who cares how they came about, these minis just reinforce my opinion that Ogres are the new must have army. They are freakin awesome ! Let the images do the talking, they say a picture can speak a thousand words well I reckon these say.... "I'm ungry !"

So far my only concern is, I'll need a careful place to store these and, for anyone who battles away from home, they are in need of a well cushioned carry case - the same applies to other recent ogres which have big "sticky-outy" bits :)

New Ogre Kingdoms Army Units (amazing pics)

I presume these belong to Games Workshop, I have no idea what the original source is though because they just turned up in the Warhammer Fantasy Battle Reporter's Facebook Group and the poster isn't saying anything.

They are outstanding models, I really, really like them and if this is what the new Ogre Kingdom's army book* is going to be all about I can see a lot of people tossing their gold crowns across GW's store counters !

* BTW, for anyone who wasn't aware, it looks like next Month's White Dwarf (Sep 2011) will have a feature on the new Ogre Kingdoms army so I guess they're the next army to hit the battlefield.

Excellent Ogre Kingdoms Tactica and Army Review by Randroid on Waaagh Cast

For a superb round up of Ogre Kingdom Army tactics check out Randroid's Ogre Army Book  review on episode 28 of the Waaagh Cast podcast.

I have only just discovered this podcast, it's very impressive, there is a wide variety of top quality content (not only Orcs and Goblins !) and it's presented in a very friendly "buddy to buddy" way.

Randroid (from the Battle Reporter forum and Ogre Stronghold) told me about it because he was interviewed on Ogre Tactics and Army Selection (his interview begins about 26 mins after the start of Episode 28 - copy below link into your browser). It's quite a long interview and he really gets to show off his experience offering some interesting insights into Ogres and why he doesn't always opt for the more common army selections).

waaaghcast.blogspot.com/2010/01/episode-28-ogre-kingdoms-army-review.html

I plan to listen to these Waaagh Casts while I paint up my Nautican army.

I've also added the Waaagh Cast to the Battle Reporter forum allies blogroll.

The Bellower eZine Issue #1 (Winter 2010) from The Ogre Stronghold website

Excellent Ogre fan created Warhammer Fantasy content

25 pages, about 32meg and available to download (paste link into your browser):-

grredux.com/bellower/The_Bellower_1_Winter_2010.pdf

I thoroughly recommend it.

I love the customized Ogre Kingdom rules and model conversion...

Rustbeard's Horde and Stompfoot his mammoth (with a toughness of 6, 12 wounds and the unbreakable rule he's not going to be easy to take down !) Having said that, there is an increasing chance of him stampeding if you manage to get him down below 6 wounds.

PS. He also causes d6+2 str10 impact hits - ouch !

The Mammoth model includes King Rustbeard himself and 2 Mammoth mounted Leadblechers ! The modeler and painter has done a great job on it (visit him here:- tushan.de).

3000+ pts Ogre Kingdoms Army bargain on eBay

Awesome Ogre Kingdoms miniatures bargain bought through this site

Some lucky Warhammerer just picked up a whole Ogre Kingdoms army by checking out the eBay ads on this site. I wish I had spotted this auction because I don't have an Ogre army and would have paid a lot more !

The winner paid $115, he got...

1 Ogre Army Book $25
1 Ogre Tyrant $35
1 Ogre Bruiser $6
3 Ogre Butchers $105
14 Ogre Ironguts $140
4 Ogre Standard Bearers $26
15 Ogre Bulls (6 still in unopened box) $100
2 Ogre Gorgers $40
3 Ogre Yhetees $60

Worth a total of $537 !!!!!

the Ogre Kingdoms eBay sale

(there were 3 "broken" models, and some painted ones but nonetheless, what a bargain)

Greasus Goldtooth Overtyrant of the Ogre Kingdoms Army

He's a bit on the chubby side is Mr Greasus ! He's the ultimate binge drinking, 'fast food' :) eating layabout but he sure knows how to swing his sceptre !

There's one stat that really stands out in his profile - a strength of 10. Yep 10 ! Dragons are mere puppy dogs in the presence of Greasus.

However, that's not the only benefit of taking this fella into battle.

Before we go any further I should probably deliver the bad news... You cannot use Greasus in anything lower than a 3000 pt game - he's that big that he takes up 2 Lord choices (I guess he needs a lot of locker space in the changing room).

This leads us to the next problem, if you take Greasus for a 3000 pt game you cannot then take Skrag the Slaughterer and I really do recommend him for large battles because of the extra Gorgers he gives you access to (as special units of 2 Gorgers per unit rather than the single model Gorger rare unit)

All that aside let's say you're dead keen on Greasus and you've got a darned big battle coming up.

Greasus is a true leader and he inspires as much worry in his own units as he does in the enemy's.

If placed well, ie centrally and directly behind his leading units (ie so he has line of sight). Those units will :-

1) Get a combat resolution bonus of +1 and...
2) Automatically rally !

Neat heh ?!

Not only that but plonk him in a unit and they all become immune to psychology.

Greasus hasn't got any weak points, he probably doesn't even know what they are and can't spell 'weak' anyway.

He's good against low leadership armies in particular because he inspires (probably not the right word) stupidity in up to D3 of their units that he can see (no range restrictions)

I suppose his main failing from a fighting perspective is that he will slow down any unit he is with due to his lower move of 4 and is less likely to be able to deliver his extra potent bull charge (D6 hits)

If you love him enough (and I do although I'd never tell him that !) then put him in your army and please...

Let me know what happened.

Ogre Enchanted Items (Ogre Kingdom Army Magic Items)

There are 6 enchanted items

One of the items is a must have if you're fighting a Chaos or Skaven army because they suffer -3 on their rolls as a result of any psychology tests they have to make as a result of the bearer or unit he is with - remember Ogres cause Fear.

If you're fighting Skaven or Chaos you must take this item. It's called the Brahmir Statute.

There are 2 other items of note.

Greyback Pelt

... that can only really be used by a Hunter or an independent Tyrant and only if you have no Yhetees in the army. It allows you to treat difficult terrain as open ground and you're character gets a -1 to hit in close combat.

Useful, particularly against Wood Elves hidind in Forests ! But expensive for 35 pts.

The other items that could come in handy to find out where the enemy's magic items are is :-

Rock Eye

...1 unit in line of sight of the bearer must reveal to the bearer all the magic items and hidden things within the unit (no need to say who carries what for magic items)

This would be very useful before you enter combat - to help avoid or counter any 'nasty suprises' the enemy has up his sleeve.

Notes:
particularly useful against 'magic heavy' or hidden assassins/special rule units. Like all Elves, Vampire Counts, Tomb Kings and Skaven. Or where you are specifically trying to avoid a certain magic item such as Van Horstmann's Speculum (Empire).

Ogre Arcane Items (Ogre Kingdoms Magic)

I'm sorry to say the Magic is not an Ogre's speciality - they're great at pie eating contests though ! Only halflings come close :)

There are 5 arcane items and (although I'm no wizard), in my opinion all but 1 of them either have signifiant drawbacks, are not powerful enough or are too expensive.

My top pick of the lot would have to be:-

Skullmantle

This costs a mere 20 pts and deducts -1 from the leadership of any enemy that has to take any kind of leadership test due to the bearer of the skullmantle or any unit he (or she - do you get fenale Ogres ?) is with.

I think this is quite a nice little bargain for 20 pts. A warbanner costs 25 pts and that only affects combat resolution. This item is for break tests and all other leadership tests

Combine this with a nice powerful unit and we're taliking about the enemy failing a lot more leadership tests that they normally do (around 20% more, depending on their unmodified leadership)

So if you rout 1 enemy unit thanks to the effect of the Skullmantle in the course of a 5 turn battle then providing that enemy unit was worth 100 pts or more it was points well spent.

Just make sure you combine it well with other items which can improve your combat resolution.

Talismans for Ogre Kingdoms Armies

There are only 4 talismans, they are quite cheap but they are nowhere near as awe inspiring as the magical weapons or armour :-

I thing the Spangleshard and Gnoblar Thief Stone are probably the most useful.

Cathayan Jet

- ward save against spells and bound items (except High and Dark Magic)

Spangleshard

- nullify wounds if roll more than the to wound roll to save a wound (good against high strength attacks)

Wyrdstone Necklace

- 5+ ward save but gets a wound on a roll of 1 immediately after deployment

Gnoblar Thiefstone

- +1 to magical resistance, can take up to 3

Not great overall but more than compensated for by the awesome magic weapons and good armour choices available.

Ogre Magic Armour (Ogre Kingdoms Army Rules)

There are 5 Ogre magic armour items all of which are quite useful but they're not, generally, as impressive as the magic weapon items.

The following 2 are my top picks and personal favourites :-

Gut Maw (30 pts)

This allows your Ogre character to restore wounds to his profile by killing an enemy opponent in a challenge. This is a great piece of kit bearing in mind that Ogres usually should issue challenges to benefit from the overkill rule. Then you have more chance of winning the combat resolution and your Ogre characters should be tougher than the average enemy character in any case.

When you kill an enemy opponent in a challenge you gain the wounds which the enemy opponent had on his starting profile up to a maximum of your starting wounds +1.

I like it !

Greedy Fist (20 pts)

This is a sneaky subversive kind of defence (the sort of thing you expect a goblin to use, althout he probably wouldn't be able to lift it).

It's a gauntlet and soaks up enemy magic. If you're attacked by a magic weapon then, if you make a successful armour save, the magic weapon loses all it's magical properties for the remainder of the battle and counts as a mundane weapon. Best used against Dwarf runic weapons with multiple runes on :)

Not only that but any wizard 'struck' (which I assume means hit) but the Ogre with the Greedy fist gauntlet in his possession loses a magic level per successful hit (which could reduce a level 4 wizard to a non-wizard in a single round of combat)

If you take this item, which you probably should for 20 pts ! , make sure you have the full works when it comes to armour (ie. Heavy Armour + Shield)

Ogres... You just have to love them :)

Rhinox Cavalry ! ! Ogres on Rhinox !

Yes they exist, for real !

For me this is the final persuader I needed to convince me that Ogres will be my next Warhamer Army investment. I guess I might wait for Vampire Counts to see what the changes are but they will have to be awesome to put my off my new found fat friends :)

I will be doing my analysis very soon, for now please enjoy this link to GW Canada for the full rules and some great piccies:-

Magic Items of the Warhammer Fantasy Ogre Kingdoms (Magic Weapons)

Ogres are not that 'big' when it comes to magic items. They have 30 in comparison with the whopping 56 available to High Elves.

There is a good mix of items. The weapons, as you might expect, are quite brutal. There are a few subtleties though and there are some items that benefit you over Lizardmen, Dwarfs, Chaos and Skaven.

Ok, let's kick this off with Magic Weapons. There are 5 of them, the are all worth having and all relatively cost effective in points.

The pick of the bunch must be the Thundermace and, if fighting low initiative enemies like Dwarfs or Lizardmen, the Siegebreaker.

The Thundermace

...uses the small template and hits are resolved as though the enemy was struck by a standard stone thrower ! So, no armour saces - ouch

The Siegebreaker

...is a 2 handed great weapon giving not 2 but +3 strength. Rather than rolling to hit against the enemy's Weapon Skill you use his initiative (that's why it's so good against Dwarfs and Lizardmen and some larger creatures).

The Thundermace costs 55 pts and the Siegebreaker costs 30 pts.

They are very cool weapons to take into battle.

Note: a general point on magic weapons and armour for Ogre Kingdoms. All of the armour and weapons are good value in comparison with other races in the Warhammer World. Given this, when designing an Ogre Army I would be inclined to make as much use as possible of magic weapons, armour and Ogre Big Names (see my earlier post for details)

Ogre Kindoms Army Analysis of Units and Special Rules

With the exception of magical items to which I will return to select my favourites, I'm nearing the end of my Ogre Army analysis.

I have to say it has been great fun. I find the army list one of the best reads of them all. GW have worked hard on creating another truly unique race and I have no reservations in recommending the book to everyone, even if you don't plan to field an Ogre army, it's a great addition to your collection.

I purchased the Skaven, Ogre and Beasts of Chaos books at more or less the same time but it's the Ogre one I keep picking up when I have a few minutes to spare.

It's true that Ogres are not great performers on the tournament circuit. I suspect this is due to their lack of cheap cannon fodder that can actually fight a bit - Gnoblars just don't cut the mustard I'm sorry to say.

I suspect there are inherent weaknesses to be addressed, I wouldn't fancy taking Ogres into battle against an experienced Wood Elf or High Elf General. But you should remember that the tournaments are played by some of the best gamers in the Warhammer world, for friendly games against your pals, Ogres are great as far as I'm concerned.

I'm just waiting to see what Games Workshop do with the 2008 version (edition 7 I presume) of Vampire Counts before I make my final decision on my next army collection. For now, Ogres head the pack, I just cannot stop fantasisng about taking Skrag the Slaughterer, 6 Gorgers (!!!) and a Gnoblar Scrap Launcher into battle :)

I hope you have enjoyed my Ogre posts so far.

Regards,
Sigmar

Ogre Big Names (Ogre Kingdoms Warhammer Army Special Rules)

Most things in the Ogre Army are expensive but Big Names are not.

Another 'in a nutshell' post...

I'm a big fan of big names, they are cheap, one can be given to any character and you can even repeat the same Big Name for more than one character. There are 2 small restrictions :-

1) Only a Tyrant can be given Kineater and
2) only a Tyrant and Hunter can be given Beastkiller.

Neither of these are major drawbacks. Kineater is a waste of 35 pts anyway. The Tyrant will be your General in 2000 pt games (if you take one) so units will benefit from his leadership within 12" anyway.

The Beast Killer Big Name would be best given to a monster assassinator anyway, enabling him to do double wound damage on large targets (providing they're not using a magic weapon)

Rather than going through all of 8 of the Big Names, I will focus on just the 1 must have Big Name. All you need to know about the others is that they are all good value for money, better value than most armies magic items (choose according to your tactics)

The one that really stands out for me is :-

Mawseeker

This is one of the best value purchases you can make in the whole Warhammer Armies Fantasy World.

It boosts the character's toughness by 1 but gives him stupidity.

Don't worry about the stupidity, give this Big Name to a Tyrant (probably your 2000 pt army boss or preferably a Hunter which both have a leadership of 9)

You will rarely fail a stupidity test with this leadership, let's face it you should be in combat most of the time so it will not be tested for anyway.

Here's the big news...

The Mawseeker costs only 10 pts !!!!

10 points to boost a character's toughness from 5 to 6 (to make him as tough as most Dragons !) is an absolute giveaway ! I would spend 50 pts, maybe more.

Make sure you use this big name. A Hunter hero who will come under a lot of sustained missile fire throughout a battle will love you for it and be your best friend for life - and you can expect him to live to old age with a toughness of 6 :)

The Blessings of the Great Maw (Ogre Army - Skrag Special Rule)

When Skrag kills his enemies personally and tosses their remains into the cauldron he takes into battle he and any Gorgers accompanying him receives blessings from the Great Maw.

They are cumulative and become quite impressive.

1 Kill
Skrag gets regeneration and all wounds restored

All Gorgers in army turn up on the battlefielld

5 kills
Skrag & Gorgers all gain +1 attack

10 kills
Skragg and his Gorgers can re-roll failed hits

15 kills
The Gorgers get regeneration ability and Skrag gets Unbreakable ability !

How hard is this unit ! Remember if Skrag is your boss you can take 2 Gorgers for each special unit choice available, that's 8 gorgers in a 2000 pts game. They can all accompany Skrag if you like (he has to be accompanied by AT LEAST 2 - no maximum is given !)

note: The Blessings of the Great Maw only applies to enemies that Skrag kills personally in face to face hand to hand combat. Routers and Gut Magic casualties don't count.
