Warhammer Battle Reports 7th / 8thNauticans / Design Fantasy Gallery

rescued from Warhammer logo obscurity by Plastic Legions !

John, the owner of plasticlegions.blogspot.com has kindly offered his artistic talents and come up with a nice new forum and webring logo for Battle Reporter.

John creates some of the best Battle Reports you can find on the internet so don't forget to visit his site. (PS. he didn't ask me to say that or ask for any kind of credit at all !)

Thanks John.

the best Warhammer Fantasy Army ever seen ?

An awesome converted Daemons of Chaos Warhammer Army

You have to admire the commitment, effort and skill in putting together this army. Warhammer Armies don't come much more inventive or much better looking than this...

"...took me nearly a year just to figure out how to do it, and then about six months of work to actually execute. But the results exceeded even my expectations. "

    Jody Tucker

    Jody Tucker's Cult of Fire:

"The Cult of Fire is a Daemons of Chaos army for Fantasy. Originally, it was going to be a mixed Daemon/Mortal army when Hordes of Chaos was still legit. Then the Daemon codex came out and split the two armies. At first, I thought the project was dead. But I managed to cobble together a fire theme from the new Daemons. The resulting army is pretty solid, gameplay-wise. I played it as a paper proxy army for a few months while they were under construction.

The fire spirits are Horrors of Tzeench (I call them Cinderkin), and the wizard is a Herald of Tzeench. The Warriors with the flaming skulls are being used as Plaguebearers for now, with the big crucible monster acting as a Herald of Nurgle. The burning Dire Wolves are Flesh Hounds, and the Horde Acolyths are Flamers (my buddy calls them the flaming jai-alai players). The fireball flinging wizard on a flying fire-steed is a Herald of Tzeench on a disk. That was a great Gamezone model with a good deal of conversion. But the big guy on the firebreathing bronze bull was the biggest challenge. He’s a Herald of Khorne on a Juggernaut, frankensteined out of about five different models.

The glowing hearts of the models were made from a keychain light mounted into the base. I sculpted all of the torsos, heads and other fiery bits, took a mold and cast them in clear resin. Then I assembled them around the LEDs and used paints and inks to give it the fiery colors. I ran fiber-optics into the eye sockets and as a trail of sparks behind some of the fireballs. This took me nearly a year just to figure out how to do it, and then about six months of work to actually execute. But the results exceeded even my expectations.

My next step is to make this army GW legal so I can take it to an official GT, so I’m probably going to do a big model when the new plastic Daemon Prince is released.

If you do then please click comments below and leave a link here and I'll ask the author if I can copy it to my:-

Nauticans - a new (unofficial) Warhammer Army (draft 2.0)

The Nautican Army List has been updated to draft 2.0

Almost 30 pages of comments and suggestions have been taken into account in the draft 2.0 update. Many (possibly 75%) of suggestions have made it into the lists in one way or another.

The list is now ready for playesting and I will be feeding back the results on the:-

    Nautican Army blogsite.

I would like to invite anyone who is interested in playing the army to submit their battle reports for inclusion on the Nautican blogsite. Simply join my the battle reporter forum so we can communicate more easily (my member name is Sigmar):-

    battlereporter.freeforums.org

Note: ths army list is far from complete. I have a lot of background material to write, the deployment page to fill in with suggested miniatures for each unit and all the inevitable changes to implement following a couple of months of playtesting.

Thanks to reaperminis.com, dragonrune.com and freebooterminiatures.com for kindly granting me permission to use some of their miniature images.

Many thanks to everyone who has participated in this project so far. Especially, LtCraggs and 40KEnthusiast from dakkadakka/forums/ who, between them, have reviewed the whole list in some depth.

Once completed the army will be available as a free to download pdf for everyone.

(there were 3 "broken" models, and some painted ones but nonetheless, what a bargain)

Winning Warhammer Fantasy Battles - a tactics guide

A guide on how to win Warhammer Battles for beginners, novices and intermediate gamers (actually it's a good reminder for veterans too).

I found this excellent article on Bugman's Brewery while researching possible reasons for a recent massacre my Dwarfs suffered at the hands of a foul Dark Elves army.

Ten ways to win a battleBasic Warhammer Tactics Originally Compiled by Boldo, revised by The Dark Dwarves (bugmansbrewery.com)

    1. Have better troops. This is the strategy of having your elite infantry fight your opponent's standard infantry. This often means setting up and moving in such a way so you can fight the opponent’s troops and be able to win an engagement somewhere. This is a common theme in the “Elite Infantry” armies or “quality over quantity” debates as units are looking to get into one-on-one engagements with enemy units and break them. It is essential when taking this approach to deploy the army in such a fashion as to preserve the advantage you enjoy of “better” troops over your opponent’s army. By doing this you utilize the deployment and terrain in a manner as to insure that the majority of the combats engaged in are single unit vs. single unit. In these types of combats, the superior WS, S, and armor save of your models should allow you enough of an advantage to win the combat by enough of a margin to “break” the enemy unit through combat resolution/damage.

    2. Flee and Flank. Most charges are made at over half range. Frequently an opponent will not have enough support troops to cover the flanks of the charging unit. Thereby after the charge has failed they have put themselves in a position to be charged and so they will have to flee as well during the Dwarf turn or be flanked. This is a tactic that can more difficult to utilize with dwarves due to their reduced movement rates relative to other armies.

    3. Circle to a flank. This requires more combat units then your opponent as you will want to move around to the flank of a unit. The opponent has to give you a flank or fall for the Flee and Flank tactic.

This is really a simple idea. If you have more tactical units then you can have a unit in front of each of your opponent’s units and still have extra. The extra units should keep trying to circle to the flank so that the opponent must either expose a flank to the unit circling to the flank or to the unit in front of it. This is the basis of the Multiple Small Unit (MSU) strategy and horde army strategy. As more units equal more opportunities for a flank charge.

    4. Pin and flank. This is best done with either unbreakable troops or stubborn troops which will be there in two combat phases, long enough to get a flank charge.

    5. Bait/Sacrifice and flank charge. One reason to put a unit in the front of your troops is to have them suck up missile fire but they are also useful to take a first charge. Even if they lose a well placed unit will force the opponent to crash into the infantry behind and allow them to be flanked next turn. This works best with troops which do not cause panic in the rest of your army. The diagram shows two examples of this.

    6. Ranks and Unit size. Very few battles are won on kills alone as most come down to combat resolution. Nothing works in combat resolution like having ranks and size. So Big units are the key and if backed up with some shooting you can make sure you have ranks and size when the troops hit.

    7. Turn the front. As troops usually form up to the defender in Warhammer it is possible to turn a unit enough to allow a flank if they can hold the first round of combat. In figure 1 the Warrior units pivot in place to await the charge. If your units are well placed an opponent may have to charge you whole front in hopes of breaking the unit on the charge, as they will be unable to get another unit to guard its flank. If it looks like the enemy unit has a good chance of breaking the target unit on the charge you may be better off to use the Flee and Flank tactic.

    8. Scout the terrain. Scouts may or may not be in your army but it is often possible to place terrain so the opponent is left with few avenues of approach. Hills and woods can be used to put troops in a situation where they can not be charged easily but the opponent can not move by them freely without exposing a flank. In the picture here the Building and forest make for only two avenues of approach. The Rangers help to support the flank by threatening a flank charge on anything that may be moving towards the flank of the Dwarf line.

    9. Hero don't fail me now. Many battles can be won by having an unopposed hero on one side. Usually a hero has 3+ swings so it could be good for two wounds a turn which would usually be enough to swing a battle from a loss to a win. This tactic is the basis of “Hero Hammer” a character that has been given many runes in hope to be survivable and inflict loads of damage upon the enemy.

    10. Avoid, avoid, avoid. Sometime the opponent has built a unit which is so unbeatable that there is nothing you can do but get out of its way. Flee from it and kill the rest of their army as it is probably not very good.

I think I will need to pursue option 10 when it comes to the Dark Elves "Lord" Crone Hellebron (she's a really evil witch... with a capital "B" !)

Nautican (unofficial) Warhammer Fantasy Army - draft 2.0 (plus miniatures)

draft 2.0 of the Nautican (unofficial) Warhammer Fantasy Battle Army...

The draft will be finalised by Sunday 14th December.

Games Workshop passes on UK VAT reduction

Cheaper Warhammer miniatures from GW UK - horray !

The Value Added Tax (or Sales Tax) was cut from 17.5% to 15% in the UK. It's not much but I thought I'd pass on the good news however small ;)

Basically, if you spend £100 you save £2.13.

    More Lizardmen Army Book rumours

new Warhammer Lizardmen Army list - likely inclusions

These were changes noted by a reader of the the small info section for each unit. They noted that there may be additional changes and bonuses both for stats and rules.

    Generic rules
Predatory fighter is gone, all saurus do indeed have a 5+ scaly skin save as base.

    Slann
May cast through skink priests, you measure both distance and LOS from the priest.

The new slann powers are called disiplines and a slann may choose up to four including powers like Terror, regenerate, 3MR etc

    Old blood
4+ scaly skin save, may take horned one (yup you read me right so he doesn't have stupidity and has M8)

    Tiktak'to
Has a more powerful Terradon with KB
A magical mask (I'm not giving it's bonuses away just yet)
May lead a terradon unit from any table edge of your choosing (rear charge on enemy war machines anybody?).

    Chakax
Very nasty, if used with TG the whole unit is unbreakable.
Has magical GW which makes all magic weapons in CC count only as mundane weapons.
Becomes even more powerful in challenges, gaining a 5+ward, re-roll failed hits and his opponant always strikes last! D:

    Krok-gar
His spear has changed and hand of the gods is now a bound spell (keeping info on how the new spear rules work as a secret for the moment).

    Carnosaur
Ultimate predator has been changed, it now does D3 wounds against EVERYTHING!

    Skinks
Can now be ranked or skirmish.
    Improved LD

    COR
    cheaper plus initiative boost.

    Temple guard
0-1 is gone, they are now special choice.
Stubborn, if used with a Slann they become immune to pyschology.

    Kroxigor
4+ Scaly skin save, I didn't read anything about a strength reduction (though it still might be there).
1 kroxigor may be put in a unit of 8 or more skinks, but does not count towards a special choice.

    Terradons
Drop rocks is back but not as powerful (again keeping the full details quiet for the moment).
Is also an option for a skink chief.

    Salamanders
It mentioned artillery dice and templates.
    special choice.
Breath weapon: Strength 3 but -3 to AS

    Razordon
    Strength 4 spikes.

    Banners
Huanchi is still one use only but now adds D6 to your charge range.

It's nice to see the Terradon rock dropping back and Temple Guard as a special choice should make them pretty formidable.

Buy cheaper UK Games Workshop miniatures on eBay

Use the fall in the value of the GBP £ to your Warhammer advantage

The GBP £ has fallen a lot over the past few weeks in comparison with the American dollar (from about $2/GBP to $1.5/GBP). If you live in the good old US of A this presents you with a possible opportunity if you're planning on spending a bit of money on Warhammer.

Most sellers on eBay and nearly all shops are prepared to ship to overseas countries, the GBP pound has fallen in value so much that it's now cheaper to buy in the UK and have the boxed sets shipped to the US (it's like going to a 25% off sale !)

    Take the below example :-
(someone recently bought this Orc and Goblin army from my site)

    Orc and Goblin Army cost
From Games Workshop (in US) $175From this eBay UK shop (see GW section) $133

    That's a saving of $42 (including shipping !)

Here's a link to the eBay Orc Goblin Army boxed Set I'm using as an example.

I just checked another couple of prices on the same shop site and you will even save about $5.5 if you buy a rock lobber or $8 on a Warboss on a Wyvern. If you bought the lobber and wyvern together you would save about $16 because packages are combined and ship for less than individual packages.
Make the most of it before GW change their prices !

Warhammer results : battles fought, victory points, most popular fantasy army release

recent Warhammer Army releases that gamers are most keen to collect

    army / votes / (% votes)
    Warriors of Chaos 45 (39%)
    Dark Elves 30 (26%)
    Vampire Counts 23 (20%)
    Daemons of Chaos 15 (13%)

    # of Warhammer fantasy battles fought

    # of games / votes / (% votes)

    11-20 16 (12%)
    21-50 38 (28%)

    201-500 7 (5%)
    501-1000 4 (3%)
    1001+ !!! 7 (5%)

It seems that about 20% of players are new to the game (10 games or less). All things being equal (and with the caveat that I'm not a statistician !) this seems to suggest that, on average, the gaming population could replace itself every 5 years. This actually seems quite high to me and implies that GW are quite reliant on their veteran gamers for business.

Do you calculate Victory Points ?

    response / votes / (% votes)
    always 15 (18%)
    usually 31 (37%)
    sometimes 22 (26%)
    never bother 15 (18%)

Well 55% say always or usually so make sure you take your calculator to the next battle :)

Almost 20% never bother totting up victory points which suggests to me that they're keeping alive the spirit of the "friendly" game (that's a relief !)
