Chaos Spawn - Warhammer Warriors of Chaos Army unit

Two model variations of the Chaos Spawn sprue

GW claim that this kit is one of the most customisable that they make. It certainly looks like they might have a point from these two very different spawnings. They say there are countless configurations and loads of options (tentacles, claws, horns etc).

Warriors of Chaos Army List rules pdf (interim rules published in White Dwarf)

Warriors of Chaos Army List pdf

Note:- this is NOT the new army book but the rules that were published in White Dwarf after the Daemons of Chaos rules were released. They were published as an interim measure until the new Warriors of Chaos Army book was published in October 2008.

They are useful to give you a rough idea of what the new army book is like.

Podhammer number 33 online (Magic Discussion and Lizardmen Rumours)

I don't often listen to the Podhammer casts but I did this time while I updated my blog. Podhammer #33 has a chat about using magic and some of the recent Lizardmen rumours. I can recommend it, it's  quite entertaining and thought provoking.

Games Workshop Scenery Painting Pack

Scenery Painting Pack from Games Workshop

Might be useful if you want to get a gaming board up and running quickly.

"This set contains one 400ml tub of brown paint, one 40ml pot of ochre paint, one 200g bag of Scorched Grass, one 25g bag of Grass, one 118 ml tub of PVA glue and one 2" scenery brush."

£25.00 GBP (released 29th Nov 2008)
(check it out on the GW site, under >Paints and Tools > Painting & Tools advance orders.)

Chaos Warriors Storm of Steel Boxed Set Details

Warriors of Chaos Storm of Steel

Released 29th November, £140 GBP. Check it out in GW advance orders.

"This set contains 101 finely-detailed Citadel miniatures, including: one metal Chaos Lord on Daemonic Mount, one metal Nurgle Chaos Sorcerer, one metal Tzeentch Chaos Sorcerer, 52 multi-part plastic Chaos Marauders, five multi-part plastic Chaos Marauder Horsemen, five multi-part plastic Chaos Knights, 24 multi-part plastic Warriors of Chaos, 10 multi-part plastic Chaos Warhounds and two multi-part plastic Spawn of Chaos."

By my reckoning this adds up to about £166, so you get a saving of 15% again. This looks like a somewhat smaller force in terms of points cost in comparison to the Chaos Hordes set. You had better make sure you like Chaos Marauders before jumping in, because this set has 52 of them !

Image is © Games Workshop Ltd. All rights reserved. Used without permission.

Warriors of Chaos Horde Boxed Set Details

Chaos Warriors Horde boxed set

Released 29th November, £185 GBP. Check it out in GW advance orders.

"This set contains 97 finely-detailed Citadel miniatures, including: one metal Chaos Lord on Juggernaut, one metal Chaos Lord on Daemonic Mount, one metal Wulfrik the Wanderer, one metal Tzeentch Chaos Sorcerer. Five multi-part plastic Chaos Marauder Horsemen, 32 multi-part plastic Warriors of Chaos, 10 multi-part plastic Chaos Knights, 10 multi-part plastic Chaos Warhounds, 20 multi-part plastic Chaos Marauders, 10 metal Chaos Chosen and two multi-part plastic Spawn of Chaos."

By my reckoning the above adds up to £216 GBP, that's about a 15% discount. I guess the choice is yours, they're certainly worth getting if you were planning to buy all of the above anyway.

I don't have the army book yet so I can't tell you how many points the above would add up to, sorry.

Ruling of how blessed mark is taken: Not all units can they up to two, for some they can up to one (i.e Saurus Calvary) while other can take up to three (unknown). If they take one, they stay as core/special. If they take up two, they move to special/rare.

Lore of the Old ones is coming back.

Special Characters:
Lords:
Kroq-Gar
Venerable Lord Kroak
Tehenhauin, Prophet of Sotek
Geomancer Lord Mazdamundi
Nakai, the Wanderer

Ten-Zlati, Herald of Kroak (bought as upgrade for Kroak)
A Skink on a special HornedOne.
Lotl Botl (tough champion upgrade)
New Skink hero, blessed of Tlazcotl, with a special mirror (?)
New (intelligent) Saurus hero, blessed by Tepok, wears the skin of a feathered serpent.

ARMY WIDE Jungle Fighter: All models move through jungle, woods, and forest as open ground and do not suffer any penalty. (Excluding Mounts)

*Temple Guard: The 0-1 choice per Slaan will be gone, though you won’t be able to bring an entire army of them…maybe 1 per 1 Saurus unit? Also can have upgrade (or come with it?) that all their Attacks count as Magical!

*Terradons: Cheaper, still Unit Strength 1, 2 Spawnings available to them (Quetzel/Sotek).

*Saurus Warriors: 2 pts cheaper, Magical Banner for 1 unit if you’re lead by Saurus Old Blood (as general), one of the Spawnings is changing-move through Difficult/Woods as if it were open.

*Saurus Cav: 4 pts cheaper, can take one Spawning only, limited to Quetzel, Sotek, and 2 others…

*Temple guards will be cheaper by 2 points, plastic instead of metel, going back to being special (With slann on the field CORE). Better options (blessed mark, carry great weapon, light armour) and still able to carry magic banner

*Skink will have th option of cohorts or skrimisher, will have “hate skeven”, able to mount on horn ones once again(in that case, they will have light armour and sheild). carry blessed mark (yay!) and will have the option of kroxigor/skinks skirmisher as a unit

*Skink preist and Skink Chief will have the option of blessed mark (including Itzl), have the option on mounts (terradon, horn ones, or cold ones) Not bad so far! There’s more.

*Predetory fighter will change into what might give the saurus warriors the advantage in combat. Something to do with stubbornness (I’ll get more info later on)

*Kroxigors will or might get light armour

*Arcanodaon will become a real model

*Snakemen will be introduce as archer with poison attack and are not slow in terrain.

Two new clases have been announced, Knights of the Blazing Sun for the Order Faction and Dark Elf Black Guard for the Destruction Faction. Due this winter 2008/09.

Knights of the Blazing Sun:-
"... are devoted to the cult of Myrmidia, goddess of warfare and protector of civilization. These frontline combatants specialize in Battlefield Commands, using applied tactical knowledge to outmaneuver their enemies and lead their allies to victory."

Dark Elf Black Guard:-
"...on the other hand, care little for tactics or guile. The embodiment of hatred and disdain, they make up the elite of the Witch King's soldiers. Equipped with the finest armor and sharpest blades, the Black Guard is an indestructible wall of hate against which all foes are crushed."

New Fallen Giant Template from Games Workshop

GW's plastic fallen giant template for Warhammer Fantasy Battle

Fallen Giant Template

GW have removed the old .pdf template and replaced it with this one. I assume it has been designed to neatly cover (or encase) models the giant falls on so it's easier to determine which ones are affected. Useful for opponents who find it difficult to come to a "gentlemen's" agreement when a giant tumbles.

Games Workshops Modular Gaming Board

Citadel Realm of Battle Gameboard

A very nice piece of kit indeed, yours for £150 GBP :-
Modular Gaming Board from Games Workshop
It's a 6 x 4 ft board, there seems to be a fair number of variations and it looks quite well thought out - I like this board. Here's some of the blurb from GW:-

"The six distinct board sections are highly detailed and can be arranged to create three styles of board: a central hill, a large valley or an open plain. You can arrange the sections in a number of different ways to create further variation within these three types."

Dogs of War is missing (I'm looking for it)

Note: (Oct 2008) the new Daemons of Chaos .pdf has still not been posted by Games Workshop.

Which Warhammer army is best for beating Dark Elves ? It's Vampire Counts again !!

Vampire Counts and High Elves are best for beating Dark Elves

"which 2000pt armies are most capable of defeating Dark Elves ?"

votes / % / Army
45 (41%) Vampire Counts
41 (37%) High Elves
40 (36%) Chaos Daemons
30 (27%) Dwarfs
30 (27%) Lizardmen
26 (23%) Bretonnia
26 (23%) Wood Elves
24 (22%) Tomb Kings
23 (21%) The Empire
22 (20%) Skaven
21 (19%) Warriors of Chaos
10 (9%) Ogre Kingdoms
4 (3%) Beasts of Chaos
4 (3%) Dark Elves
4 (3%) Dogs of War

Once again the Vamps and the great of Ulthuan come out on top. The results were very similar to the poll about which army can beat Daemons. Interesting, Daemons of Chaos didn't take top spot which is suprising given the plaudits they are receiving on all the forums.

* note - I made a big error with this poll because I forgot to include Orcs & Goblins on it - sorry folks !

Which Warhammer Army is best for beating Chaos Daemons ? - Vampire Counts !

Vampire Counts and High Elves are best for beating Daemons of Chaos

"which 2000pt armies are most capable of defeating Chaos Daemons ?"

votes / (%) / Army
55 (44%) Vampire Counts
48 (39%) High Elves
45 (36%) Lizardmen
42 (34%) Dwarfs
34 (27%) The Empire
25 (20%) Dark Elves
24 (19%) Bretonnia
22 (17%) Skaven
21 (17%) Wood Elves
19 (15%) Tomb Kings
16 (13%) Chaos Daemons
16 (13%) Ogre Kingdoms
14 (11%) Warriors of Chaos
13 (10%) Orcs and Goblins
5 (4%) Dogs of War
3 (2%) Beasts of Chaos

I think the only big suprise is the relatively low position of Wood Elves given how well they usually perform in tournaments.

thanks for voting.

Warhammer Online 750,000 players but a touch imbalanced in favour of forces of Destruction

Forces of Order are a numbered !

It sounds like most people are chosing to join the forces of destruction in Warhammer Online so Mythic are offering a 20% bonus in experience and renown for forces of Order players.

Games Workshop Chicago Grand Tournament Results - 2008

Chaos Daemons and Dark Elves are on top !

There were 46 games played, the table shows the average army score and the number of games each army was involved in.

The average score was 56, Daemons, Dark Elves, Wood Elves, Vampires and Empire all did better than average. That is, generally, the newer army books performed better than the older ones.

Interview with Gav Thorpe (ex Games Workshop) and Designer of the new Dark Elves Army Book

Gav Thorpe recently left GW and worked on some big projects while he was there. Extract...

"Which parts of working for GW did you enjoy the most; rules dev, White Dwarf, writing novels?

The novels were never part of the day job; they were freelance projects in my own time (and now full time!). White Dwarf was very exciting, but also lots of hard work with many weekends spent working, especially when we moved over to ‘Fat Dwarf’. Games Dev is the most fun overall, as you get to play in lots of different sandpits – rules, background, hobby articles, range planning, talking to artists and miniatures designers. Some of the best memories are from when projects were just starting up, and especially with totally new subjects like Inquisitor or a new army such as Ogres – or even a big revamp of an army like Bretonnians and Wood Elves. We would have great chats with the artists and designers about what was possible and it was a very creative atmosphere. Working with such talented people is very rewarding and it’s those opportunities that I’ll miss the most. Running around on deadline day getting corrections inputted, checking photography, getting approvals and all that are things I won’t miss!"
